Lower Extremity Assessment Project (LEAP) study set out to answer many of the questions surrounding the decision of whether to amputate or salvage limbs in the setting of severe lower extremity trauma. A National Institutes of Health-funded, multicenter, prospective observational study, the LEAP study represented a milestone in orthopedic trauma research, and perhaps in orthopedics. The LEAP study attempted to define the characteristics of the individuals who sustained these injuries, the characteristics of their environment, the variables of the physical aspects of their injury, the secondary medical and mental conditions that arose from their injury and treatment, their ultimate functional status, and their general health. In the realm of evidence-based medicine, the LEAP studies provided a wealth of data, but still failed to completely determine treatment at the onset of severe lower extremity trauma.

Few studies have explored hip morphology and cartilage composition in female athletes or the impact of asymmetric repetitive loading, such as occurs during softball pitching. The current cross-sectional study assessed bilateral bony hip morphology on computed tomography imaging in collegiate-level softball pitchers ('Pitch1', n = 25) and cross-country runners ('Run', n = 13). Magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess cartilage relaxation times in a second cohort of pitchers ('Pitch2', n = 10) and non-athletic controls ('Con', n = 4).

Background: This study investigated the influence of surgical alignment techniques on knee joint biomechanics during stair negotiation tasks. Our hypothesis was that a more personalized joint alignment would result in reduced medial knee loading biomechanics to negotiate the stairs.
Methods: There were 28 adults (14 mechanical alignments [MA], 14 kinematic alignment [KA]) who underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA) at least one year post-operatively and performed five stair ascent and descent trials at their preferred velocities.

Background: Proximal femoral fractures has been associated with high mortality risk, while little is known about more distal lower extremity fractures. The aim was to report 30- and 365-days mortality in surgically treated lower extremity fractures in individuals above 65 years.
