The structures of the N,N'-dimethylpropyleneurea (dmpu) solvated lanthanoid(III) ions have been studied in dmpu solution (La-Nd, Sm-Lu) and in solid iodide salts (La-Nd, Sm, Gd-Lu) by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), and single crystal X-ray diffraction (La, Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, Er, Yb, and Lu); the EXAFS studies were performed on both K and L(III) absorption edges. Because of the space-demanding properties of dmpu upon coordination, dmpu solvated metal ions often show coordination numbers lower than those found in corresponding hydrates and solvates of oxygen donor solvents without steric requirements beyond the size of the donor atom. All lanthanoid(III) ions are seven-coordinate in solution, except lutetium(III) which is six-coordinated in regular octahedral fashion, whereas in the solid iodide salts the dmpu solvated lanthanoid(III) ions are all six-coordinate in regular octahedral fashion. A comparison of Ln-O bond lengths in a large number of lanthanoid(III) complexes with neutral oxygen donor ligands and different configurations shows that the metal ion-oxygen distance is specific for each coordination number with a narrow bond distance distribution. This also shows that the radius of the coordinated oxygen atom in these compounds can be assumed to be 1.34 A as proposed for coordinated water, while for ethers such as tetrahydrofuran (thf) it is somewhat larger. Using this atomic radius of oxygen in coordinated water molecules, we have calculated the ionic radii of the lanthanoid(III) ions in four- to nine-coordination and evaluated using the bond lengths reported for homo- and heteroleptic complexes in oxygen donor solvates in solution and solid state. This yields new and revised ionic radii which in some instances are significantly different from the ionic radii normally referenced in the literature, including interpolated values for the elusive promethium(III) ion.

The structures of nine hydrated metal ions in aqueous solution have been redetermined by large angle X-ray scattering to obtain experimental data of better quality than those reported 40-50 years ago. Accurate M-O and M-(O-H)⋯O distances and M-O(H)⋯O bond angles are reported for the hydrated magnesium(II), aluminium(III), manganese(II), iron(II), iron(III), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II) and zinc(II) ions; the subscripts I and II denote oxygen atoms in the first and second hydration sphere, respectively. Reported structures of hydrated metal ions in aqueous solution are summarized and evaluated with emphasis on a possible relationship between M-O-O bond angles and bonding character.

Magnetic exchange coupling can modulate the slow magnetic relaxation in single-molecule magnets. Despite this, elucidation of exchange coupling remains a significant challenge for the lanthanoid(iii) ions, both experimentally and computationally. In this work, the crystal field splitting and 4f-π exchange coupling in the erbium-semiquinonate complex [ErTpdbsq] (Er-dbsq; Tp = hydro-tris(1-pyrazolyl)borate, dbsqH = 3,5-di--butyl-1,2-semiquinone) have been determined by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), magnetometry, and CASSCF-SO calculations.

Crystallographic investigations of eight homoleptic ,'-dimethylpropyleneurea (dmpu) coordinated metal ions in the solid state, [Mg(dmpu)]I (1), [Ca(dmpu)]I (2), [Ca(dmpu)](ClO) (3), [Ca(dmpu)](CFSO) (4), [Sr(dmpu)](CFSO) (5), [Ba(dmpu)](CFSO) (6), [Sc(dmpu)]I (7), and [Pr(dmpu)]I(I) (8), and the complex [CoBr(dmpu)] (9) as well as the structures of the dmpu coordinated calcium, strontium, barium, scandium(III) and cobalt(II) ions and the cobalt(II) bromide complex in dmpu solution as determined by EXAFS are reported. The methyl groups in the dmpu molecule are close to the oxygen donor atom, causing steric restrictions, and making dmpu space-demanding at coordination to metal ions. The large volume required by the dmpu ligand at coordination contributes to crowdedness around the metal ion with often lower coordination numbers than for oxygen donor ligands without such steric restrictions.

Six new mixed-ligand bimetallic complexes [Eu(bz)(tta)(phen)] (1), [Gd(bz)(tta)(phen)] (2), [EuTb(bz)(tta)(phen)] (3), [EuGd(bz)(tta)(phen)] (4), [EuGd(bz)(tta)(phen)] (5) and [EuGd(bz)(tta)(phen)] (6) have been prepared with the Eu, Gd and Tb ions and the benzoate (bz), 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate (tta) and the 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) ligands. The compounds combine highly efficient antennas to obtain highly luminescent complexes to enhance solar cell efficiency. The benzoate ligand has been chosen to take its advantage as a bridging ligand to end up with bimetallic complexes to study the effect of combining two metal ions in the luminescent molecule.
