The Keystone Symposium on the Molecular Basis for Biological Membrane Organization and Dynamics held in January this year offered new insights into the molecular machines at work in cells. Topics included the machinery responsible for the dynamic shape of organelles, the budding and fusion of vesicular carriers, and the intricate sorting systems that ensure the correct delivery of cellular components.

Protein catalysis and allostery require the atomic-level orchestration and motion of residues and ligand, solvent and protein effector molecules. However, the ability to design protein activity through precise protein-solvent cooperative interactions has not yet been demonstrated. Here we report the design of 14 membrane receptors that catalyse G protein nucleotide exchange through diverse engineered allosteric pathways mediated by cooperative networks of intraprotein, protein-ligand and -solvent molecule interactions.

Nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) based on atomically-thin tungsten diselenide (WSe), benefiting from the excellent material properties and the mechanical degree of freedom, offer an ideal platform for studying and exploiting dynamic strain engineering and cross-scale vibration coupling in two-dimensional (2D) crystals. However, such opportunity has remained largely unexplored for WSe NEMS, impeding exploration of exquisite physical processes and realization of novel device functions. Here, we demonstrate dynamic coupling between atomic lattice vibration and nanomechanical resonances in few-layer WSe NEMS.

Background: Split tendon transfer of the posterior tibialis (SPOTT) is a surgical procedure in which the split posterior tibialis tendon is transferred posterior to the fibula (PO) with insertion on the peroneus brevis tendon to rebalance the forces across the hindfoot. Routing of the split tendon through the interosseous membrane (IO) is a variation with the potential benefit of augmenting ankle dorsiflexion in swing.
Research Question: Does IO routing improve ankle dorsiflexion in swing and/or varus in stance compared to PO routing?
Methods: A retrospective chart review was completed to identify forty-two patients who underwent a SPOTT procedure for equinovarus foot deformity.
