Forensic identification: From a faith-based "Science" to a scientific science.

This article reviews the fundamental assumptions of forensic identification ("individualization") science and notes the lack of empirical evidence or theory supporting its typical strong claims. The article then discusses three general research strategies for placing these fields on firmer scientific ground. It concludes by suggesting what forensic identification science experts can do while awaiting that scientific foundation.

Paper differentiation can play a critical role in forensic document examination along with examinations of handwriting identification, impressed writing, and ink and printer toner analyses. If reference database to compare was constructed, paper analyses are also useful in terms of examining when document paper was produced. In this study, two datasets were utilized for principal component analysis (PCA) and t-SNE, and each dataset was constructed for the manufacturer discrimination and document paper dating tasks.

Focusing on the Yashkun population of Gilgit-Baltistan, an administrative territory in northern Pakistan, our study investigated mtDNA haplotypes as indicators of ancient gene flow and genetic diversity. Genomic DNA was extracted and evaluated for quality using agarose gel electrophoresis. The complete control region of mtDNA (nt 16024-576) was amplified via PCR, and sequencing was performed using the Big Dye Terminator Kit on an Applied Biosystems Genetic Analyzer.

Multi-insertion/deletion polymorphisms (Multi-InDels), as the novel genetic markers, show great potential in forensic research. Whereas, forensic researchers mainly focus on the multi-InDels on the autosomes, which can provide relatively limited information in some complex paternity cases. In this study, a novel X chromosomal multi-InDel multiplex amplification system was designed, containing 22 multi-InDels and one STR locus on the X chromosome.
