The frequencies of polymorphic variants of the BoLA-DRB3 locus have been estimated in groups of Holstein and Ayrshire bull sires. Considerably increased frequencies of individual alleles have been found in some groups of cattle, depending on the breed and breeding value. The possible causes and consequences of the observed relationships have been analyzed.

Mastitis is a significant factor that decreases milk production in cows of different breeds in Kazakhstan. The objective of this study was to determine the genetic makeup of Holstein cows by analysing specific gene loci (SELL, MX1, CXCR1+291C>T and CXCR1+1093C>T) that are linked to resistance against mastitis. The goal was to identify cows with favourable genotypes that are less prone to udder diseases.

Signatures of selection in Nelore cattle revealed by whole-genome sequencing data.

Genomics

March 2022

Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias, Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho", Jaboticabal, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • The Nelore cattle breed is globally farmed for its high economic value in the beef market and its adaptability to tropical climates, particularly in Brazil, where purebred individuals are certified based on genealogy.
  • A study compared two categories of Nelore cattle—purebreds (PO) and those in a selective breeding program (CEIP)—using whole-genome sequencing to identify regions indicative of genetic selection and improvement in key traits.
  • The analysis revealed over 1713 differentiated genomic regions and highlighted several genes associated with tropical adaptation, growth, fat deposition, and feed efficiency, suggesting specific genetic variations that contribute to the breed's performance in various environments.

Allelic diversity at BoLA DRB3 locus and association with predisposition to clinical mastitis in indicus and crossbred cattle.

Anim Biotechnol

November 2023

Animal Biotechnology Division, ICAR-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Karnal, Haryana, India.

Bovine lymphocyte antigen (BoLA) DRB3 locus in healthy and mastitis affected cattle has been genotyped by a polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphisms (PCR-RLFP) using restriction enzyme, followed by sequencing. In 130 farm animals, 25 BoLA DRB3 alleles have been detected by PCR-RFLP. Three distinct allelic patterns significantly associated with mastitis in Karan Fries crossbred and Sahiwal indicus cattle have been identified, whereas, four other allelic patterns were significantly high in frequency among healthy animals.

Expression-based analysis of genes related to single nucleotide polymorphism hits associated with bovine leukemia virus proviral load in Argentinean dairy cattle.

In dairy cattle infected with bovine leukemia virus (BLV), the proviral load (PVL) level is directly related to the viral transmission from infected animals to their healthy herdmates. Two contrasting phenotypic groups can be identified when assessing PVL in peripheral blood of infected cows. A large number of reports point to bovine genetic variants (single nucleotide polymorphisms) as one of the key determinants underlying PVL level.

The genetic diversity of the BoLA-DRB3 gene has been reported in different cattle breeds owing to its central role in the immune response. However, it is still unknown in hundreds of cattle breeds, especially native populations. Here, we studied BoLA-DRB3 genetic diversity in Highland Creole cattle (CrAl) from Western Bolivia, raised at altitudes between 3800 and 4200 m.
