Nano-optical transducers have been utilized in existing and emerging applications due to their ability to obtain small optical spots, large transmission efficiency, and narrow and adjustable spectral response. In emerging nano-optical applications, such as heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR), these features are not sufficient. For example, in HAMR a transducer should also satisfy additional requirements, such as massproduction and integrability with other device components. In this study, the basic principles of Maxwell's equations and image theory for good metals are utilized to design a perpendicular oriented single-pole nano-optical transducer, which can be integrated into the manufacturing technologies of current hard disk drive heads. The perpendicular oriented single-pole nano-optical transducer is investigated using 3-D finite element method. Gold transducers are investigated for both longitudinal and perpendicular orientations. The optical intensity profiles and spot sizes of longitudinal and perpendicular oriented transducers are compared for various fly heights. It is shown that a perpendicular ridge waveguide provides localized optical spots with intensities comparable to longitudinal transducers.

In biological systems such as cells, the macromolecules, which are anisotropic particles, diffuse in a crowded medium. In the present work, we have studied the diffusion of spheroidal particles diffusing between cylindrical obstacles by varying the density of the obstacles as well as the spheroidal particles. Analytical calculation of the free energy showed that the orientational vector of a single oblate particle will be aligned perpendicular, and a prolate particle will be aligned parallel to the symmetry axis of the cylindrical obstacles in equilibrium.

Rützler & Muzik, 1993 is a poriferan species that competes with corals and is known as a coral-killing sponge. However, limited information is available on its biology, including morphological traits. This study aims to examine the arrangement and development of spicules in various body parts of the sponge, including settled larvae.

Crystal growth of 2-(3,4,5-triphen-ylphen-yl)acetic acid () from aceto-nitrile yields a monosolvate, CHO·CHCN, of the space group 1. In the crystal, the title mol-ecule adopts a conformation in which the three phenyl rings are arranged in a paddlewheel-like fashion around the central arene ring and the carboxyl residue is oriented nearly perpendicular to the plane of this benzene ring. Inversion-symmetric dimers of O-H⋯O-bonded mol-ecules of represent the basic supra-molecular entities of the crystal structure.

Liquid crystals (LCs), when interfaced with chemically functionalized surfaces, can amplify a range of chemical and physical transformations into optical outputs. While metal cation-binding sites on surfaces have been shown to provide a basis for the design of chemoresponsive LCs, the cations have been found to dissociate from the surfaces and dissolve slowly into LCs, resulting in time-dependent changes in the properties of LC-solid interfaces (which impacts the reliability of devices incorporating such surfaces). Here, we explore the use of surfaces comprising metal-coordinating polymers to minimize the dissolution of metal cations into LCs and characterize the impact of the interfacial environment created by the coordinating polymer on the ordering and time-dependent properties of LCs.

The quadrilateral surface fractures of the acetabulum are becoming more frequent due to the aging population. The optimal fixation of the quadrilateral surface through an appropriate surgical approach and a reliable and effective technique presents a challenge for orthopedic trauma surgeons. In this study, we present the results of 12 patients treated in our department who underwent internal fixation of the quadrilateral surface with two reconstruction plates in a vertical orientation for adequate fracture buttressing.
