This experimental study was designed to validate a short-term supplemental reading intervention for at-risk first-grade children. Although substantial research on long-term supplemental reading interventions exists, less is known about short-term interventions. Thirty first-grade children were randomly assigned to intervention or control conditions. Students in the intervention received 16 hours of instruction. Analyses of pre- and posttest data and growth measures suggest that short-term supplemental reading intervention had a significant effect on children's reading skills; however, effects were not consistent across measures. Parent and teacher ratings moderated significant effects. Findings support the validity of a brief intervention for students at risk for reading failure that may inform Tier 2 interventions within a Response to Intervention framework.

Annual review of false-negative (FN) mammograms is a mandatory and critical component of the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) annual mammography audit. FN review can help hone reading skills and improve the ability to detect cancers at mammography. Subtle architectural distortion, asymmetries (seen only on one view), small lesions, lesions with probably benign appearance (circumscribed regular borders), isolated microcalcifications, and skin thickening are the most common mammographic findings when the malignancy is visible at retrospective review of FN mammograms.

Methemoglobinemia is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition in which hemoglobin is oxidized, impairing the oxygen-carrying capacity. While congenital forms exist, acquired methemoglobinemia can occur in perioperative settings, especially following exposure to oxidizing agents such as dyes used in sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB). Patent Blue V, a synthetic aniline dye commonly used for SLNB, has been associated with rare but serious adverse effects, including methemoglobinemia.
