We demonstrate the suitability of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy as a non-destructive, contact-free tool to monitor the glass transition in polymers--a core feature of the amorphous phase. Below the glass transition temperature T(g), segmental motions along the polymer chain are frozen due to the lack of free volume between neighboring macromolecules. We show that this transition also reflects in the temperature dependence of the refractive index at terahertz frequencies. Two domains can be identified, which differ in their sensitivity to temperature changes. To verify the proposed approach, we determine the glass transition temperature T(g) of semi-crystalline poly(oxymethylene) (POM) with terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and validate the results by destructive differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements.

Research efforts are increasingly directed towards the development of biodegradable polymers derived from renewable agricultural resources. Polymer blends, which combine multiple polymers, offer enhanced properties such as ductility and toughness while being more cost-effective compared to the development of specialized copolymers. This study examines nine binary and four ternary blends of polylactic acid (PLA), poly(butylene succinate--adipate) (PBSA), and polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA).

Vitrification is a conventional and mature method for embryo cryopreservation, but ice crystals formed during the vitrification process can damage embryos. HPC has the property of forming a high-viscosity gel under low-temperature conditions, so it can be added to vitrification solutions to investigate whether it improves the negative impact of vitrification on embryos. The results showed that the addition of HPC (50 μg/ml) to the vitrification solution significantly increased the post-warming survival rate of sheep morula embryos.

Here, we report a water-induced supramolecular polymer adhesive formed from confined water and an intrinsically amphiphilic macrocyclic self-assembly in a nanophase-separated structure. The selenium-containing crown ether macrocycle, featuring a strong hydrophilic hydrogen-bond receptor (selenoxide) and a synergistic hydrophobic selenium-substituted crown core, confines water within a segregated, interdigitated architecture. While water molecules typically freeze around 0 °C, the confined water in this supramolecular polymer remains in a liquid-like state down to -80 °C.

Compositions of ethylene glycol dicyclopentenyl ether methacrylate (EGDEMA), a vegetable oil based alkyl methacrylate (C13MA), and furfuryl methacrylate (FMA) were terpolymerized for dual-crosslinked networks with tailored mechanical and thermal properties. Specifically, initiators for continuous activator regeneration (ICAR) atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) afforded materials with tailored glass transition temperature ( ) and incorporation of furan and norbornene functionalities within a single chain. The terpolymer with high furan and norbornene functionality (Ter2: = 0.

Linear aliphatic oligoesters derived from ε-caprolactone (CL) were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) using terpene alcohols that have antibacterial activity as initiators (nerol, geraniol, β-citronellol and farnesol). Ammonium decamolybdate (NH)[MoO] was used as a catalyst. From previous oligoesters, monodisperse species of monomers, dimers, and trimers were isolated by flash column chromatography (FCC).
