A mild, nonlinear, time-delayed feedback signal was applied to two heterogeneous oscillators in order to synchronize their frequencies with an arbitrary and controllable phase difference. The feedback was designed using phase models constructed from experimental measurements of the intrinsic dynamical properties of the oscillators. The feedback signal produced an interaction function that corresponds to the desired collective behaviour. The synchronized phase difference between the elements can be tuned to any value on the interval 0 and 2pi by shifting the phase of the interaction function using the feedback delay. Numerical simulations were conducted and experiments carried out with electrochemical oscillators.

Balanced self-renewal and differentiation of stem cells are crucial for maintaining tissue homeostasis, but the underlying mechanisms of this process remain poorly understood. Here, from an RNA interference (RNAi) screen in adult Drosophila intestinal stem cells (ISCs), we identify a factor, Pax, which is orthologous to mammalian PXN, coordinates the proliferation and differentiation of ISCs during both normal homeostasis and injury-induced midgut regeneration in Drosophila. Loss of Pax promotes ISC proliferation while suppressing its differentiation into absorptive enterocytes (ECs).

We introduce a novel control mode for Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) that leverages di/dz feedback. By superimposing a high-frequency sinusoidal modulation on the control signal, we extract the amplitude of the resulting tunneling current to obtain a di/dz measurement as the tip is scanned over the surface. A feedback control loop is then closed to maintain a constant di/dz, enhancing the sensitivity of the tip to subtle surface variations throughout a scan.
