Background: The incidence of thoracic trauma has rapidly increased in this century of high speed vehicles, violence and various other disasters. It has been observed that chest intubation was required in more than 75% of patients.
Methods: This prospective study was performed in cardiothoracic surgery unit of Ayub Teaching Hospital Abbottabad from Jun 2007 to Dec 2007. A total of 114 consecutive patients with chest trauma were included in the study, their patterns of injuries classified, treatment strategies and outcome were recorded on a proforma.
Results: Out of 114 patients with chest trauma, 76 (66.65%) were having penetrating and 38 (33.33%) had blunt trauma. Haemothorax was detected in 67 (58.77%), Pneumothorax in 23 (20.17%), rib fracture in 11 (15.02%) and diaphragmatic injuries in 4 (3.5%) cases. Overall complication rate was 14%. Wound infection was present in 8 (7.01%) and empyema in 4 (3.5%). Mortality was 2.6%.
Conclusion: Penetrating chest injuries were more common than blunt injuries and chest intubation with resuscitation was adequate in most of the patients.

Background: Despite increased recruitment of Latina medical students, the percentage of Latina physicians has remained stagnant, suggesting unique retentive barriers affecting this population. Discriminatory experiences involving bias may contribute to difficulties in the retention and advancement of Latinas in medicine. This qualitative analysis aimed to explore thematic barriers prevalent among Latinas throughout their medical training in the United States.

Diabetic wounds are notoriously difficult to heal due to impaired cell repair mechanisms, reduced angiogenesis, and a heightened risk of infection. Fibroblasts play a vital role in wound healing by producing extracellular matrix (ECM) components and various growth factors, but their function is inhibited in diabetic wounds. Chitooligosaccharides (COS), intermediate products of chitosan degradation, have shown efficacy in promoting tissue repair, yet their role in diabetic wound healing remains underexplored.

The ability of neurons to sense and respond to damage is crucial for maintaining homeostasis and facilitating nervous system repair. For some cell types, notably dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), extensive profiling has uncovered a significant transcriptional response to axon injury, which influences survival and regenerative outcomes. In contrast, the injury responses of most supraspinal cell types, which display limited regeneration after spinal damage, remain mostly unknown.

Background: Ultrasound is now readily available in the prehospital setting and its use has been highlighted as one of the top research priorities in prehospital care. Clinical examination remains the standard care for diagnosing lung injury in the prehospital setting, yet this can be challenging and has poor diagnostic accuracy. This review evaluates the accuracy of prehospital ultrasound for the diagnoses of pneumothorax, haemothorax and pulmonary contusions in patients with trauma.
