We studied the impact of MAOA genotype, childhood sexual assault, and harsh discipline on clinical externalizing symptoms (substance problems, adult antisocial behavior, and conduct disorder). Participants were 841 individual twins from the Minnesota Twin Family Study assessed through age 25. MAOA genotype was not associated with differences in any phenotype, nor was there a significant interaction between MAOA and harsh discipline for any phenotype or a significant interaction between MAOA and childhood sexual assault for substance problems. We found evidence that childhood sexual assault interacted with MAOA genotype to predict antisocial behavior and conduct disorder symptoms. Individuals with the low MAOA activity genotype who reported childhood sexual assault had more symptoms than individuals with either the high MAOA activity genotype and/or no history of childhood sexual assault. These findings suggest that the previously reported interaction between MAOA and childhood maltreatment may be specific to the antisocial subset of externalizing disorders.

Central precocious puberty (CPP) is an endocrine disorder in children caused by the early activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis (HPGA), leading to elevated gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which triggers the development of gonads and the secretion of sex hormones. This eventually results in the development of internal and external genitalia and secondary sexual characteristics. CPP significantly affects the physical and mental health of children and may increase the risk of various adult diseases.

Laboratory of Psychiatric Neuroscience, Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine, James Cook University, Townsville, Queensland, Australia; College of Medicine and Dentistry, James Cook University, Queensland, Australia. Electronic address:

Background: It has been well-established that the allostatic load (AL) index, a cumulative score of multi-system dysregulation in response to chronic stress, is significantly increased at the time of a psychiatric diagnosis. However, no studies have investigated if there is an association between the AL index in childhood and the later development of mental health symptoms in young adults.

Methods: Using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), a population cohort from Bristol, United Kingdom, we investigated the AL index at age 9 years and the risks for mental health symptoms at age 24 years.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Emory University, Atlanta, GA, USA.

Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with an increased risk of developing chronic health conditions later in life, including Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) and subjective cognitive decline (SCD), a self-reported confusion and memory loss and one of the first clinical manifestations of ADRD. While ACEs and SCD have both been individually studied in transgender and nonbinary (TGN) adults, no study has examined the relationship between ACEs and SCD among this population. This study sought to establish the prevalence of ACEs and their association with SCD among TGN adults.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Hotchkiss Brain Institute, University of Calgary, Calgary, AB, Canada.

Background: Of the 12 modifiable dementia risk factors established by the Lancet Commission, only one addresses early life. However, the brain is highly plastic in early life. Adverse childhood experiences (ACE)-physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and neglect-can result in long-term reductions in brain volume.
