NTPDase (EC 3.6.1.5) is an enzyme that hydrolyzes extracellular nucleoside tri-and/ or diphosphates to form ATP, which can serve as a substrate for ecto-5'- nucleotidase (EC 3.1.3.5), releasing adenosine, an inhibitor of platelet aggregation and an immunosuppressant agent. In this study, the activity of enzymes that hydrolyze adenine nucleotides was investigated in lymphocytes and platelets of immunosuppressed rats. NTPDase and ecto-5'-nucleotidase activities were determined by colorimetric assay with quantification of the inorganic phosphate released. A significant increase in NTPDase activity was observed in lymphocytes (about 30% in ATP hydrolysis and 80% in ADP hydrolysis, at p<0.05 and p<0.01, respectively). In platelets, there was a significant increase in 5'-nucleotidase activity in immunosuppressed rats (p<0.01) when compared with controls. These results suggest that the hydrolysis of adenine nucleotides is modified in the immunosuppressed state, possibly to compensate for alterations that occur and to avoid the adverse effects of therapy.

Resorcinol is a widespread substance used in a large variety of manufacturing industries, including cosmetics, with endocrine-disrupting activity on the thyroid function. The aim of the present study was to develop and validate a sensitive, selective and robust method to quantify resorcinol in urine and thereby assess hairdressers' occupational exposure. As resorcinol is mainly excreted in urine as glucuronide or sulfate forms, the first step consisted in hydrolyzing urine samples with a β-glucuronidase-arylsulfatase enzyme for 16 h.

A variety of phytochemicals from different plants are collected by bees into bee pollen granules. This research focused on evaluating the effects of lactic acid fermentation and enzymatic hydrolysis on the antibacterial activity of bee pollen and its interaction with antibiotics. There is limited knowledge regarding the interactions between treated bee pollen extracts and antibiotics, and this study contributes to the field by providing new insights into the antibacterial activity of pollen subjected to eight distinct treatment methods.

The association between microRNAs and various diseases, especially cancer, has been established in recent years, indicating that miRNAs can potentially serve as biomarkers for these diseases. Determining miRNA concentrations in biological samples is crucial for disease diagnosis. Nevertheless, the stem-loop reverse transcription quantitative PCR method, the gold standard for detecting miRNA, has great challenges in terms of high costs and enzyme limitations when applied to clinical biological samples.

Bile salt hydrolase (BSH), a probiotic-related enzyme with cholesterol-assimilating and anti-hypercholesterolemic abilities, has been isolated from intestinal bacteria; however, BSH activity of bacteria in bile-salt-free (non-intestinal) environments is largely unknown. Here, we aimed to identify BSH from non-intestinal and characterize its enzymatic function. We successfully isolated a plasmid-encoded () from , and the recombinant EfpBSH showed BSH activity that preferentially hydrolyzed taurine-conjugated bile salts, unlike the activity of known BSHs.
