Ionic liquids (ILs) based on trihexyltetradecylphosphonium coupled with either diphenylphosphate or bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide have been shown to react with magnesium alloy surfaces, leading to the formation a surface film that can improve the corrosion resistance of the alloy. The morphology and microstructure of the magnesium surface seems critical in determining the nature of the interphase, with grain boundary phases and intermetallics within the grain, rich in zirconium and zinc, showing almost no interaction with the IL and thereby resulting in a heterogeneous surface film. This has been explained, on the basis of solid-state NMR evidence, as being due to the extremely low reactivity of the native oxide films on the intermetallics (ZrO2 and ZnO) with the IL as compared with the magnesium-rich matrix where a magnesium hydroxide and/or carbonate inorganic surface is likely. Solid-state NMR characterization of the ZE41 alloy surface treated with the IL based on (Tf)2N(-) indicates that this anion reacts to form a metal fluoride rich surface in addition to an organic component. The diphenylphosphate anion also seems to undergo an additional chemical process on the metal surface, indicating that film formation on the metal is not a simple chemical interaction between the components of the IL and the substrate but may involve electrochemical processes.

Glycerol-(9,10-trioxolane) trioleate (OTOA) is a promising material that combines good plasticizing properties for PLA with profound antimicrobial activity, which makes it suitable for application in state-of-the-art biomedical and packaging materials with added functionality. On the other hand, application of OTOA in PLA-based antibacterial materials is hindered by a lack of knowledge on kinetics of the OTOA release. In this work, the release of glycero-(9,10-trioxolane) trioleate (OTOA) from PLA films with 50% OTOA content was studied during incubation in normal saline solution, and for the first time, the kinetics of OTOA release from PLA film was evaluated.

PEA 46 is a biobased polymer with promising properties for sustainable packaging applications, which can be obtained via polymerization of a furan 2,5-dicarboxylic acid (2,5-FDCA) derivative and a diol monomer containing internal amide bonds (46 amido diol). In the literature, PEA 46 showed a complex series of thermal transitions during DSC scans. For this reason, in this initial exploratory study PEA 46 was subjected to compression molding and the melting behavior of film samples was investigated with parallel DSC and WAXS analyses.

Aluminum nitride (AlN) with a wide band gap (approximately 6.2 eV) has attractive characteristics, including high thermal conductivity, a high dielectric constant, and good insulating properties, which are suitable for the field of resistive random access memory. AlN thin films were deposited on ITO substrate using the radio-frequency magnetron sputtering technique.

We synthesized n-type polymers poly{[N,N'-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl]-alt-5,5'-(2,2'-bithiophene)} [P(NDI2OD-T2)] and poly{[N,N'-bis(3-(4-cardanol)propyl)-naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic diimide]-alt-[5,5'-bis(2-thienyl)-2,2'-bithiophene]} [P(NDICL-T2)] with cardanol-based side chains via Stille coupling to enhance electron mobility. Replacing the 2-octyldodecyl side chain with cardanol in P(NDICL-T2) improved electron mobility due to increased chain flexibility and ordered packing. Lower glass transition temperature (), red-shifted UV-vis absorption, results from crystalline structure analysis, indicating tighter lamellar spacing and enhanced molecular ordering, and smoother surface morphology confirmed the enhanced intermolecular interactions and uniform film formation.

To enhance the tribological properties of the coatings and to inhibit cracking, sandwich-structured composite coatings were fabricated, consisting of a Ni60CuMo/IN718 transition layer and a Ni60CuMo/Ni-coated Cu wear-resistant layer with four different Ni-coated Cu contents. The results indicate that the transition layer inhibits the crack formation in the coating, and the refined grain structure stabilizes its average hardness at approximately 485 HV. Increasing the Cu content in the wear-resistant layer exacerbates the segregation of the Cu-rich solid solution phases and refines the in situ-generated CrC, TiC, and NbC phases.
