Background: To provide information concerning the geographical distribution of selenium (Se) in the soils of Scotland, we analysed 47 arable soils selected on the basis of their parent rock, which were expected to have relatively high, low or unclassified Se concentrations. To investigate relationships between the actual minerals in the soils and the aqua regia extractable Se concentration of the soil, soil minerals were quantified by X-ray diffraction.
Results: The aqua regia extractable Se concentrations of the soils were between 0.19 and 1.46 mg kg(-1). No simple correlation between the aqua regia extractable Se concentrations of the soil and the parent rock classification estimated by soil survey was evident. Partial least squares analysis revealed that the aqua regia extractable Se concentration of the soils was positively related to loss on ignition (LOI) or C concentration and negatively related to the K-feldspar concentration, with other minerals being less important.
Conclusion: The Se concentration of arable topsoils from Scotland is more related to LOI or carbon concentration, with parent material being less important.

A new and high performance polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) digestor was designed and fabricated in-house for the total dissolution of granite samples for the determination of technology-critical elements (TCEs) by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Initially, the granite sample (∼0.25 g) was placed in the PTFE digestor and added 8 mL(v/v) of 20%HF+40%HCl+10%HNO acid mixture.

Introduction: The method of dissolving a body to conceal crimes, a practice dating back to ancient times, has recently captured the interest of scientists and the film industry. Real-life cases inspired by media portrayals underscore the importance of understanding this process, which aims to prevent identification or locate the body. Historical and contemporary examples highlight the use of substances like caustic potash and various acids.

Cement is one of the most widely used materials in the global construction industry, serving as an adhesive and binder in projects that require strength and durability. Additionally, cement production indicates a country's development and economic activity, with global production reaching approximately 4 billion tons annually. It is a fine powder composed mainly of lime, silica, iron oxide, and alumina.

The development and understanding of alternative plasmonic materials are crucial steps for leveraging new plasmonic technologies. Although gold and silver nanostructures have been intensively studied, the promising plasmonic, chemical and physical attributes of rhodium remain poorly investigated. Here, we report the synthesis and plasmonic response of spherical Rh nanoparticles (NPs) with sizes in the 20-40 nm range.
