MMPI profile patterns were compared between combat veteran groups of 168 POW survivors and 67 servicemen who were not war captives in WWII and the Korean Conflict. Results confirm previous reports that the scales, Hypochondriasis (Hs), Depression (D), and Hysteria (Hy), are characteristically elevated among former POWs. Findings also point to the contribution of scales, Psychasthenia (Pt), Paranoia (Pa), and Ego Strength (Es), in differentiating groups, suggesting that negative ruminations, heightened anxiety, interpersonal anger and suspiciousness, and low self-esteem contribute significantly to group differentiation.

Clinical Consultation in the Workplace: Are There Implications for Response Attitudes?

Psychol Belg

January 2025

DivPsi -PSP (Portuguese Police -Clinical Psychology Department), Unidade Especial de Polícia -Quinta das Águas Livres, 2605-197 Belas, Portugal.

The clinical-organizational context (where clinical psychology services are provided in the individuals' professional setting) has still been insufficiently approached in research, namely the influence it may have on the response attitudes of individuals undergoing psychological assessment. Our main goal is to find out if, when psychological assessment occurs in the workplace context, patients being assessed present specific response bias that may have implications for the clinical results and correlative decisions. Five hundred and ten adult participants grouped in two samples of ambulatory patients - Clinical-Organizational Sample (COS = 238) and Clinical Sample (CS = 272) - were assessed with the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-RF validity and substantive scales.

Individuals can sway legal, medical, employment, or other decisions by dishonestly self-reporting on psychological tests. Accordingly, the Comprehensive Assessment of Traits relevant to Personality Disorder (CAT-PD) and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) include validity scales to detect overreporting and underreporting. Although many studies have empirically tested the validity scales of the MMPI-2 and the MMPI-2-RF, fewer have done so with the updated MMPI-3, and none with the CAT-PD.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the diversity of Feeding and Eating Disorders (FED) by examining how different symptoms and personality issues overlap, proposing that current classifications might not fully capture the complexity of these disorders.
  • Researchers used Latent Profile Analysis on 109 patients, identifying three distinct profiles: low symptoms with no personality issues, high symptoms without dysfunction, and high symptoms with dysfunctional personality traits.
  • Results showed noteworthy differences in BMI, eating disorder severity, and psychiatric diagnoses among these profiles, indicating that the most complex cases suffered the most severe symptoms and related issues, challenging traditional diagnostic categories.

Trauma is very common and associated with significant co-morbidity world-wide, particularly PTSD and frequently other mental health disorders. However, it can be challenging to identify victims of abuse as self-reports can be difficult to elicit due to emotional distress. Better confirmation of a history of significant mistreatment can assist significantly in treatment planning.
