Polycrystalline zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were deposited on soda-lime glass substrates using the chemical spray pyrolysis method at 450 °C. The samples were irradiated with 8 keV H ions at three different fluences using a Colutron ion gun. The effects of the irradiation on the structural, morphological, and optical properties were studied with different techniques, including Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Ultraviolet and Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis).

ZrN and TiN thin coatings have been investigated for use on stainless steel for bipolar plates of proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers. Films were deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering using Ar and N from metallic Zr and Ti targets on different substrates to perform a deep characterization of their relevant properties. The effect of the deposition parameters, such as N/Ar ratio, working pressure, or supplied power, has been explored.

Designs for two automated atomic layer deposition (ALD) flow reactors are presented, and their capabilities for coating additively manufactured (AM) metal prints are described. One instrument allows the coating of several AM parts in batches, while the other is useful for single part experiments. To demonstrate reactor capabilities, alumina (Al2O3) was deposited onto AM 316L stainless steel by dosing with water (H2O) vapor and trimethylaluminum (TMA) and purging with nitrogen gas (N2).

RE-doped β-GaO seems attractive for future high-power LEDs operating in high irradiation environments. In this work, we pay special attention to the issue of radiation-induced defect anisotropy in β-GaO, which is crucial for device manufacturing. Using the RBS/c technique, we have carefully studied the structural changes caused by implantation and post-implantation annealing in two of the most commonly used crystallographic orientations of β-GaO, namely the (-201) and (010).

We evaluate a method to quantify composition depth gradients in intact metal-organic framework (MOF) single crystals and thereby derive diffusion coefficients of postsynthetically incorporated active sites by nondestructive ion-beam microanalysis. Zr-based UiO-67-bpy (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid) MOFs were synthesized on Si substrates and then metalated postsynthetically with NiCl for 2-48 h, resulting in different Ni depth distributions. Simultaneous micro-Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (μ-RBS) and micro-particle induced X-ray emission (μ-PIXE) analysis were used for the spatially resolved chemical analysis of the MOF single crystals.
