The results of a computational study with multiconfigurational quantum chemical methods on actinide monoxides (AnO) and dioxides (AnO(2)) for An = Th, Pa, U, Np, Pu, Am, and Cm, are presented. First and second ionization energies were determined and compared with experimental values, when available. The trend along the series is analyzed in terms of the electronic configurations of the various species. The agreement with experiment is excellent in most cases. Of particular interest is the first ionization of PuO(2). We applied cutting-edge theoretical methods to refine the ionization energy, but our computed data fall in the range of approximately 6 eV and not in the approximately 7 eV region as the experiment dictates. Such a system requires further computational and experimental attention.

Context: Ionization and adsorption in gas discharge are similar to electrophilic and nucleophilic reactions. The molecular descriptors characterizing reactions such as electrostatic potential descriptors are useful in predicting the electrical strength of environmentally friendly gases. In this study, descriptors of 73 molecules are employed for correlation analysis with electrical strength.

Etomidate and its structural analogues, which have anesthetic effects, are classified as controlled psychotropic drugs. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have become more and more popular. With the increase of adding etomidate and its analogues to electronic liquids (e-liquids), there is a trend of abuse, which is a tough problem urgently need to be solved.

Irradiation of condensed matter with ionizing radiation generally causes direct photoionization as well as secondary processes that often dominate the ionization dynamics. Here, large helium (He) nanodroplets with radius ≳ 40 nm doped with lithium (Li) atoms are irradiated with extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photons of energy hν ≥ 44.4 eV and indirect ionization of the Li dopants is observed in addition to direct photoionization of the He droplets.

Theoretical simulations of electron detachment processes are vital for understanding chemical redox reactions, semiconductor and electrochemical properties, and high-energy radiation damage. However, accurate calculations of ionized electronic states are very challenging due to their open-shell nature, importance of electron correlation effects, and strong interactions with chemical environment. In this work, we present an efficient approach based on algebraic diagrammatic construction theory with polarizable embedding that allows to accurately simulate ionized electronic states in condensed-phase or biochemical environments (PE-IP-ADC).

Photoelectrochemical cells (PECs) can directly utilize solar energy to drive chemical reactions to produce fuels and chemicals. Oxide-based photoelectrodes in general exhibit enhanced stability against photocorrosion, which is a critical advantage for building a sustainable PEC. However, most oxide-based semiconductors are n-type, and p-type oxides that can be used as photocathodes are limited.
