Since March 2008, the new Amplatzer duct occluder II (ADO II) has been used clinically for PDA closure in Europe. We report an interesting case of a 2(1/2)-year-old girl with a 3-mm conical shape PDA (type A PDA) who underwent uneventful implantation of 3/4 ADO II with complete closure by angiography and echocardiographic control at the end of the procedure. To our surprise, echocardiography 24 hr later revealed a moderate secondary shunt due to kinking of the aortic retention disk of the device with the central waist and the pulmonary retention disk still in correct position. The persistent shunt was closed 1 year later in the cath lab with a 9/6 Nit-Occlud device. To our knowledge, this is the first reported late complication directly related to the device.

A range of NMR techniques, including diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) were used to characterise complex micelles formed by the anti-microbial cationic surfactant cetylpyridium chloride and to quantify the degree of interaction between cetylpyridium chloride and hydroxyethyl cellulose in a variety of commercially relevant formulations as a model for the disk retention assay. This NMR-derived binding information was then compared with the results of formulation analysis by traditional disk retention assay (DRA) and anti-microbial activity assays to assess the suitability of these NMR techniques for the rapid identification of formulation components that could augment or retard antimicrobial activity DRA. NMR showed a strong ability to predict anti-microbial activity for a diverse range of formulations containing cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC).

Novel composite hydrogels composed of Capparis spinosa L. extract (CSL) and sodium alginate (SA) were developed for biomedical applications using calcium chloride (CaCl₂) as a nontoxic ionic crosslinker. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst stability metrics derived from aqueous model systems (AMSs) prove valuable only if they are transferable to technical membrane electrode assembly (MEA) settings. Currently, there is consensus that stability data derived from ubiquitous rotating disk electrode (RDE)-based investigations substantially overestimate material degradation mainly due to the nonideal inertness of catalyst-backing electrode materials as well as bubble shielding of the catalyst by evolved oxygen. Despite the independently developed understanding of these two processes, their interplay and relative impact on intrinsic and operational material stability have not yet been established.
