Production, respiration, egestion of faeces and excretion of ammonia were measured in competing early developmental stages of fish species (herring, smelt, perch and stickleback) to calculate their daily energy (food) requirements in the Vistula Lagoon, southern Baltic Sea. The highest consumption (per capita and per unit body mass) was found in perch and European smelt, and the lowest in herring. However, young herring had the highest contribution to the exploitation of food resources because of their dominance in the Lagoon. The coefficient of assimilation efficiency U(-1) and coefficient of the utilization of assimilated energy for growth K2 also had the highest values in this species.

Sea surface displacement (SSD) is a crucial parameter in environmental engineering. The measurements of SSD are susceptible to the failure of instruments and equipment, data losses, and other unpredictable events. In this study, we developed an innovative nonlinear regression trees (NRT) technique to retrieve the missing data of SSD.

Methane emission from the Pregolya River Estuary (Baltic Sea).

Mar Pollut Bull

December 2024

Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia. Electronic address:

Measurements of dissolved methane were performed in a sequentially connected system of water bodies that form the Pregolya River Estuary: Pregolya River - Kaliningrad Sea Canal - Vistula and Curonian Lagoons - Baltic Straight - Baltic Sea. Methane concentrations were detected on a gas chromatograph with a flame ionization detector, and the fluxes were calculated using a boundary layer gas transfer model. During a study period between 2016 and 2022, the Pregolya River is characterized by the high range of methane concentrations, reaching 8838 nmol/L in the annual maximum in May.

Article Synopsis
  • Plasticizers like phthalate esters (PAEs) are common in consumer and industrial products, leading to environmental concerns, especially in vulnerable lagoon ecosystems.
  • A study measuring PAE concentrations in the water and sediments of three European lagoons found moderate levels, with certain compounds like DEHP and DOP posing notable risks to aquatic life.
  • Additionally, the research revealed active microbial communities capable of breaking down PAEs, which primarily operates in sediment layers, suggesting potential natural remediation processes in these environments.

Biofilms can enhance the sorption of heavy metals onto microplastic (MP) surfaces. However, most research in this field relies on laboratory experiments and neglects metal fractions and seasonal variations. Further studies of the metal/biofilm interaction in the aquatic environment are essential for assessing the ecological threat that MPs pose.

Water pollution has become a critical global concern requiring effective monitoring techniques and robust protection strategies. Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are increasingly detected in various water sources, with their harmful effects on humans and ecosystems continually evolving. Based on literature reports highlighting the promising sorption properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the aim of this study was to evaluate the suitability of NH-MIL-125 (Ti) and UiO-66 (Ce) as sorbents in passive sampling devices (MOFs-PSDs) for the collection and extraction of a wide group of CECs.
