Radiation-Therapy Related Salivary Dysfunction.

Semin Radiat Oncol

April 2025

Department of Human Oncology, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Madison, WI.; University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Madison, WI.. Electronic address:

Radiation-induced xerostomia (RIX) is a common and debilitating side effect of head and neck cancer radiotherapy, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. This review comprehensively summarizes the current understanding of RIX, encompassing its clinical quantification, underlying pathophysiology, and established and emerging treatment modalities. We explore various objective and subjective measures used to quantify salivary flow and assess the severity of xerostomia in clinical settings.

To counteract host plant defenses, aphids secrete salivary effectors during feeding. Exact functional roles of many salivary effectors in Sitobion avenae (Fabricius), are still elusive. Here, we cloned a salivary glutathione peroxidase (GPx) coding gene (i.

Resilience to stressors has emerged as a major gerontological concept aiming to promote more positive outcomes for older adults. Achieving this aim relies on determining mechanisms underlying capacity to respond resiliently. This paper seeks proof of principle for the hypothesis that physical aspects of said capacity are rooted in the fitness of one's physiology governing stress response, conceptualized as a dynamical system.

The alpha-Gal syndrome (AGS) evolved as a catastrophic selection associated with anti-α-Gal IgM/IgG protective response against pathogen infection and tick-borne food allergy caused by IgE-type antibodies against this glycan present in glycoproteins and glycolipids from mammalian meat and derived products. The immune response to α-Gal is modulated by tick salivary proteins with and without α-Gal modifications in combination with tick saliva non-protein fraction. Herein, we characterized the role of tick salivary proteins, metalloprotease and allergen-like p23 in AGS and protection against tuberculosis in the AGS zebrafish animal model.

Genetics and epigenetics are mechanisms proposed for explaining post-COVID-19 condition. This secondary analysis aimed to investigate if DNA methylation levels of the ACE2 promoter are different depending on the genotype of five COVID-19-related polymorphisms in individuals who had been previously hospitalized due to SARS-CoV-2 infection. We collected non-stimulated saliva samples from 279 (48.
