An interview survey of 4180 girls aged 1-18 years, their mothers, teachers and tutors was conducted. It was found that the maternity instinct is inborn but it starts to show only during the second year of life and is manifested in the form of playing with dolls and reaches its peak at the age of 3-5 years. Playing with dolls occurs subconsciously and is not used for teaching the girls to acquire the habits of caring for a baby. The formation of family orientation is shaped at an early school age. Under the influence of their mothers school-girls form a reproductive orientation for having a small number of children--1.9-2.0.

Research on media's effects on body perception has mainly focused on the role of vision of extreme body types. However, haptics is a major part of the way children experience bodies. Playing with unrealistically thin dolls has been linked to the emergence of body image concerns, but the perceptual mechanisms remain unknown.

Background: Plastic additives have adverse effects on human health. Children frequently use toys that contain various substances found in paints, plasticizers, and other materials, which heighten the risk of specific chemical exposure. Infants are particularly prone to chemical exposure through the "mouthing" behavior because of the possibility of placing toys in their mouths.

Doll play may provide opportunities for children to rehearse social interactions, even when playing alone. Previous research has found that the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) was more engaged when children played with dolls alone, compared to playing with tablet games alone. Children's use of internal state language (ISL) about others was also associated with pSTS activity.

Monkeys do not show sex differences in toy preferences through their individual choices.

Biol Sex Differ

February 2023

Neuroscience and Behavior Unit, California National Primate Research Center, University of California, County Road 98 at Hutchison Drive, Davis, CA, 95616, USA.

Background: As interest in evaluating sex differences in nonhuman animals grows, the finding that male and female monkeys have toy preferences that differ, and that parallel those documented in human children, has garnered significant attention and is leveraged as an argument in favor of a biological contribution for human sex differences. To date, however, only two studies have investigated sex differences in monkeys' toy preferences, both documenting that males prefer toys considered to be "masculine" (such as vehicles) and females prefer toys considered to be "feminine" (such as dolls). Monkeys in these studies were tested in their social groups, making it hard to determine if the sex differences reported reflect actual individual preferences or result from social dynamics present at the time of testing.
