An important goal for rehabilitation after knee replacement is achievement of good capacity of flexion so that the patient can cope with his everyday needs. If this fails, brisement forcé may be undertaken; the knee joint being moved thoroughly with the patient in general anaesthesia. The results of brisement forcé in 32 knees showed that brisement forcé had an immediate good effect on the patients' ability to flex the joints but that the benefit was short-lived and possible positive effect on the final mobility appears to be less certain. Complaints of pain prior to manipulation and audible rupture of adhesions and tenacious resistance during manipulation were deleterious prognostic signs for good mobility in the final result.
