Aim: To approach the expression and its significance of connection tissue growth factor in articular cartilage during repair after full-thickness cartilage injury in young rabbit model.
Methods: Young rabbit model of spontaneous healing of full-thickness cartilage defect in the medial femoral knee condyle was reproduced in present study. A total of twenty-five young New Zealand white rabbit were randomly divided into five groups: control group, 24 hour group, 1 week group, 4 week group and 8 week group after full-thickness cartilage injury (5 each). The mRNA and protein expression of CTGF were detected with RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry, respectively.
Results: The morphologically good repairs with hyaline-like cartilage appearance were observed at 8 weeks after injury. The expression of CTGF mRNA was detected in all groups. Expression of CTGF mRNA was significantly higher in all groups after cartilage injury than in control group(P<0.05).The immunohistochemistry results showed that the expression of CTGF was positive in all groups, and immunolocalization was observed in the middle and deep zone.
Conclusion: The up-regulated expression of CTGF is accompanied with spontaneous healing of full-thickness cartilage defect in young rabbit, and CTGF may play a role in the repair of articular cartilage injury.

Background: The presence of full-thickness cartilage in the lateral compartment on valgus stress radiography is a criterion for medial mobile-bearing unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). However, the appropriateness of medial UKA is uncertain when preoperative MRI shows extrusion of the lateral meniscus. We therefore assessed how preoperative MRI-detected lateral meniscus extrusion affects mid-term functional outcomes after mobile-bearing UKA.

Knee joint osteoarthritis (OA) is among the most prevalent degenerative diseases of the joints in the body. Various scoring system exists for grading OA, such as (1) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) Osteoarthritis Knee Score (MOAKS), (2) clinical grading by Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC), and (3) X-ray grading of the Kellgren-Lawrence grading system (K-L). To study MRI findings and MOAKS scoring of knee OA and correlation with WOMAC and K-L scoring.

This proof-of-concept study explores quantitative imaging of articular cartilage using photon-counting detector computed tomography (PCD-CT) with a dual-contrast agent approach, comparing it to clinical dual-energy CT (DECT). The diffusion of cationic iodinated CA4 + and non-ionic gadolinium-based gadoteridol contrast agents into ex vivo bovine medial tibial plateau cartilage was tracked over 72 h. Continuous maps of the contrast agents' diffusion were created, and correlations with biomechanical indentation parameters (equilibrium and instantaneous moduli, and relaxation time constants) were examined at 28 specific locations.

In this 12-month long, preclinical large animal study using a canine model, we report that engineered osteochondral grafts (comprised of allogeneic chondrocyte-seeded hydrogels with the capacity for sustained release of the corticosteroid dexamethasone [DEX], cultured to functional mechanical properties, and incorporated over porous titanium bases), can successfully repair damaged cartilage. DEX release from within engineered cartilage was hypothesized to improve initial cartilage repair by modulating the local inflammatory environment, which was also associated with suppressed degenerative changes exhibited by menisci and synovium. We note that not all histological and clinical outcomes at an intermediary time point of three months paralleled 12-month outcomes, which emphasizes the importance of studies in valid preclinical models that incorporate clinically relevant follow-up durations.

Objective: To synthesize available evidence on the impact of concomitant focal cartilage lesions and their surgical treatment on clinical outcomes in the setting of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-reconstruction at short (6-36 months) and midterm (3-8 years) follow-up.
Design: Original level 1 or 2 studies comparing any patient-reported or objective outcomes in ACL-reconstructed patients (1) with and without concomitant focal cartilage lesion(s) or (2) after any type of cartilage surgical treatment were considered for inclusion. Systematic searches were conducted in MEDLINE via Ovid, Cochrane Library, EMBASE via OvidSP, and Web of Science.
