The Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS) is a comprehensive landmark study of sleep and its impacts on health outcomes. A primary metric of the SHHS is the in-home polysomnogram, which includes two electroencephalographic (EEG) channels for each subject, at two visits. The volume and importance of this data presents enormous challenges for analysis. To address these challenges, we introduce multilevel functional principal component analysis (MFPCA), a novel statistical methodology designed to extract core intra- and inter-subject geometric components of multilevel functional data. Though motivated by the SHHS, the proposed methodology is generally applicable, with potential relevance to many modern scientific studies of hierarchical or longitudinal functional outcomes. Notably, using MFPCA, we identify and quantify associations between EEG activity during sleep and adverse cardiovascular outcomes.

Physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) are associated with affective feeling states in older adults, though the strength and direction of associations vary. This study used the Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) to determine how habit strength affects affective responses to movement behaviors. Older adults completed a 4-day EMA protocol with 10 randomly delivered, smartphone assessments per day while simultaneously wearing two activity monitors recording PA and SB.

Background: Characterizing changes in cognitive function during the last years of life is vital for providing appropriate care, supporting quality of life, and planning for future demands on our medical and social resources. The aim of this project was to construct a cognitive function trajectory file spanning the last five years of life to better understand common patterns of cognitive aging.
Method: The analytic cohort included 2019 Medicare decedents, aged 50 or older at death, with five years of continuous enrollment before death (n = 1,952,408).
Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) increases the risk of cognitive impairment (CI), particularly in women. Physical activity and cognitive training can improve cognition, with potential interactive effects. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of MindMoves, a 24-week multidomain physical activity and cognitive training intervention, on cognition in older women with CVD.
