Apolipoprotein (apo) E phenotype and genotype frequencies, due to allelic variation at amino acids 112 and 158, have been investigated in 95 Caucasian non-insulin dependent diabetic patients (NIDDM). Phenotypes were determined by one-dimensional isoelectric focussing (IEF). In this sample, the frequency of the epsilon 2 allele was higher (0.122) and the frequency of the epsilon 4 allele lower (0.101) than previously reported in Caucasian populations (P less than 0.05). Genotypes were assigned using the technique of polymerase chain reaction and allele specific oligonucleotide probes. By contrast, the frequencies of the alleles determined by genotyping was similar to previously reported in Caucasian populations (apo epsilon 2, 0.095; epsilon 3, 0.758; epsilon 4, 0.147; P greater than 0.1). It is possible that in patients with NIDDM post-translational modification of apo E may lead to disparities, with phenotypes being unrepresentative of allelic variation at this gene locus.

Background: This study explores the cross-fertilization of transgenic tobacco plants to produce dual-specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) targeting Ebola virus-like particles and HER2 proteins. We generated F plants by hybridizing individual transgenic lines expressing the anti-HER2 breast cancer VHH mAb (HV) and the H-13F6 human anti-Ebola large single chain mAb (EL).
Objective: Hybridizing transgenic plants to express dual-antibodies between different structures VHH and LSCK indicate the potential of transgenic plants as a cost-effective and scalable production system for dual targeting mAbs.

Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the impact of nano platinum-hydrogen saline (Pt NPs + H) on oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) in neonatal rats, with the goal to contribute new insights into the therapeutic strategies for retinopathy of prematurity.
Methods: Pt NPs + H formulation was synthesized to address OIR in a rat model. Subsequent examination included the assessment of retinal blood vessel distribution and morphology through hematoxylin and eosin (HE) and isolectin B4 (IB4) staining techniques.

Background: Certain cognitive processes require inhibition provided by the somatostatin (SST) class of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurons in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). This inhibition onto pyramidal neuron dendrites depends on both SST and GABA signaling. Although SST mRNA levels are lower in the DLPFC in schizophrenia, it is not known if SST neurons exhibit alterations in the capacity to synthesize GABA, principally via the 67-kilodalton isoform of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD67).

Background: Most cases of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) can be diagnosed by copy number analysis of survival motor neuron (SMN) 1. However, a small number of cases of SMA can only be diagnosed by sequencing analysis. We present a case of SMA diagnosed 7 years after the onset of symptoms.

Entamoeba histolytica infections range from asymptomatic intestinal amebiasis to more severe syndromes like invasive colitis or hepatic abscess. While diagnostic tests available for assessing these infections have evolved, the optimal use of newer diagnostics like enteric multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) panels has not been fully established. Here we describe the case of a 34-year-old male with an amebic liver abscess (ALA) that was diagnosed via multiplex Gastrointestinal (GI) PCR panel on formed stool and subsequently confirmed by testing liver abscess fluid (off-label) on the same multiplex GI PCR panel leading to rapid diagnosis and targeted treatment modification with excellent outcome.
