Computer studies have shown that azimuthal static mirror misfigures as small as lambda/20 can lead to severe degradation in the far field on axis intensity for resonators with an annular gain region. This poor far-field pattern can, however, be dramatically improved by the use of adaptive elements within the resonator. A rear cone in the resonator had a static misfigure applied to it, and an adaptive ring axicon located in the front of the resonator was deformed in such a way as to compensate for the misfigure of the rear element of the resonator.

Mussels from the Mytilus edulis species complex experience a salinity gradient from the North Sea into the Baltic Proper ranging from 32 to 5. As osmoconformers, they adjust their internal osmolarity to match that of their surroundings, which presents a significant challenge to the metabolic machinery, including their mitochondria. We hypothesized that the osmotic optima for the mitochondrial function of mussels matches the prevailing habitat salinity and is accompanied by a population specific metabolite profile.

Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition emerging in early childhood, characterized by core features such as sociocommunicative deficits and repetitive, rigid behaviors, interests, and activities. In addition to these, disruptive behaviors (DB), including aggression, self-injury, and severe tantrums, are frequently observed in pediatric patients with ASD. The atypical antipsychotics risperidone and aripiprazole, currently the only Food and Drug Administration-approved treatments for severe DB in patients with ASD, often encounter therapeutic failure or intolerance.

Endophytes typically coexist with plants in symbiosis and transition into the saprobic system as plant tissues senesce, participating in the decomposition process of litter. However, the dynamic changes of endophytic communities during this process and their role in litter decomposition remain unclear. This study tracked the microbial composition across the transition from live leaves to litter in (L.

This paper explores the intersections of constructal thermodynamics, and its semantic ontology within the context of autopoetic, digital and computational design in protocell inspired numerical architectural and urban narratives that are examined here as open systems. Constructal law is the thermodynamic theory based on the analysis of fluxes across the border of an open system. Protocells, as dynamic and adaptive open finite size systems, serve in this paper as a compelling metaphor and design model for responsive and sustainable manmade architectural and urban environments.

To adapt to change, neural systems may change a large number of parameters, which is a slow process involving forgetting past information. In contrast, animals leverage distribution changes to segment their stream of experience into tasks and associate them with internal task abstracts.
