The first reported coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) experiments within the cylinder of a firing internal combustion engine are described. The feasibility of making noninvasive temperature and species measurements, with good spatial and temporal resolution, both before and after ignition has been demonstrated. Temperatures have been derived from the shape of the Q-branch vibrational spectrum of nitrogen since it is present as a major species and does not take part in combustion. Methods of overcoming such problems as were encountered are discussed.

Ammonia (NH) holds promise as a carbon-free fuel. Blending it with highly reactive fuels could efficiently alleviate issues such as slow burning rates and narrow flammability ranges. Ethanol (CHOH) offers the advantage of carbon neutrality and has a high-octane rating.

In the present work, we performed calculations of the kinetic isotope effect (KIE) on H/D, N/N, O/O, and C/C isotopic substitution in the dissociation of beta-sheet polyglycine dimers of different lengths into two monomer chains. This dissociation reaction, proceeding via breaking of the interchain hydrogen bonds (H-bonds), is considered to be a model of unfolding of the secondary structure of proteins. The calculated strengthening of the interchain hydrogen bonds N-H⋯O=C due to heavy isotope substitution decreases in the row H/D >> N/N > O/O > C/C.

Cigarette smoking remains an enormous public health problem causing millions of preventable deaths annually worldwide. Although safe and efficient smoking cessation pharmacotherapies such as nicotine replacement products and the medications varenicline and bupropion are available, long-term abstinence rates remain low and new approaches to help smokers successfully quit smoking are needed. In recent years, electronic nicotine delivery systems such as e-cigarettes and heated-tobacco products, and novel smokeless nicotine delivery products like nicotine pouches have gained widespread popularity.

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Dalian Maritime University, Dalian 116026, PR China; Dalian Key Laboratory of Internal Combustion Engine Tribology and Reliability Engineering, Dalian 116026, PR China. Electronic address:

As a global challenge, marine biofouling is causing serious economic losses and adverse ecological impacts. In recent years, a variety of promising and environmentally friendly anti-fouling strategies have emerged, among which the excellent anti-fouling performance of bionic autocrine coatings has been recognized. However, bionic autocrine coatings still suffer from uncontrollable secretion behavior, poor mechanical stability, and poor abrasion resistance.

Ab Initio Rotational and Vibrational Spectroscopy of CH Radicals at the Coupled Cluster Level.

J Phys Chem A

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, University of California, Davis, One Shields Ave., Davis, California 95616, United States.

Combustion and pyrolysis processes of allene and propyne are known to involve radicals with the structural formula CH, the most stable of which is the classic resonance-stabilized allyl radical. In addition to allyl, four other isomers of CH are possible: the propene derivatives -1-propenyl, -1-propenyl, and 2-propenyl, as well as the cyclopropane derivative cyclopropyl. Among these 5 species, the allyl radical has been extensively studied both theoretically and spectroscopically; however, little is known about the spectroscopy of the cyclopropyl radical, and virtually no experimental spectroscopic data are available for the remaining three.
