The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently increased payment for evaluation and management (E/M) visits, but did not apply these updates to post-operative global period visits. We investigated the resulting Medicare fee-for-service revenue loss for otolaryngologists. Using publicly available Medicare spending/utilization data, we estimated how much additional payment otolaryngologists would have received in 2023 if CMS had reimbursed global period visits at the same rates as other E/M visits.

However, the trade-off of this production scheme has led to infectious disease outbreaks that harm food production with economic impacts. Evolving environmental conditions due to climate change have brought about changes in agriculture, which is required for human life as both a source of food and income. International trade can act as a buffer against potential negative impacts of climate change on crop yields, but recent years have seen breakdowns in global trade, including export bans to improve domestic food security. For countries that rely heavily on imported food, governments may institute policies to protect their agricultural industry from changes in climate-induced crop yield changes and other countries' potential trade restrictions.

Importance: Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) excise taxes are popular policy interventions aimed at decreasing SSB purchasing and consumption to improve cardiometabolic health and generate revenue for public health initiatives. There is limited evidence that these taxes in the US are associated with weight-related outcomes in adults, a primary contributor to cardiometabolic health.
Objective: To determine the association between SSB excise taxes and adult body mass index (BMI) and proportion of adults with overweight or obesity among California cities and assess whether associations vary by demographic characteristics.

The promise of contributory health insurance to generate additional, self-sustaining funding for the health sector has not been achieved in many low- and lower-middle-income countries. Instead, contributory health insurance has been found to exacerbate inequities in access to health care because entitlements are linked to contributions. For these countries with contributory health insurance schemes, with separate institutional arrangements for revenue collection and purchasing, that operate alongside budget-funded and other health financing schemes, it is usually not politically or technically feasible to reverse or eliminate these arrangements even when they fragment the health system.
