Published: March 2010

In recent work published in Nature, Raj et al. (2010) use single mRNA molecule quantification to show that variation in gene expression in Caenorhabditis elegans increases in mutants displaying incomplete penetrance. They find that a bimodal response is triggered when noisy expression of an upstream regulator crosses a critical threshold.

DEVILS: a tool for the visualization of large datasets with a high dynamic range.

The number of grey values that can be displayed on monitors and be processed by the human eye is smaller than the dynamic range of image-based sensors. This makes the visualization of such data a challenge, especially with specimens where small dim structures are equally important as large bright ones, or whenever variations in intensity, such as non-homogeneous staining efficiencies or light depth penetration, becomes an issue. While simple intensity display mappings are easily possible, these fail to provide a one-shot observation that can display objects of varying intensities.

Targeted Drug Delivery in Brain Tumors-nanochemistry Applications and Advances.

Curr Top Med Chem

October 2021

Department of Neurosurgery, Faculty of Medicine, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, 99199-91766, Iran.

Background: Despite advances in surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, brain tumors are still a major health issue due to poor prognosis and high mortality rate. The current treatment options have limited efficiency. The main barriers to effective clinical treatment are systemic toxicity of cytotoxic compounds, the physical and functional barrier of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and low selectivity of the therapeutic agents to tumor cells.

AC-DC electropenetrography: fundamentals, controversies, and perspectives for arthropod pest management.

March 2021

Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS, USA.

Studying the intimate association of arthropods with their physical substrate is both important and challenging. It is important because substrate is a key determinant for organism fitness; challenging because the intricacies of this association are dynamic, and difficult to record and resolve. The advent of electropenetrography (EPG) and subsequent developments allowed researchers to overcome this challenge.

The use of permeation enhancers such as microneedles (MNs) to increase drug penetration across intraoral mucosa has increased in recent years. Permeation studies, commonly performed using vertical diffusion cells, are a well-established way to preview formulations and enhance their performance during the development stage. However, to our knowledge, the existing intraoral mucosa barrier models do not permit permeation using MN-pretreated mucosa due to their insufficient thickness.

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) station at the Novosibirsk Free Electron Laser (NovoFEL) user facility is described. It is based on X-band (∼9 GHz) EPR spectrometer and operates in both Continuous Wave (CW) and Time-Resolved (TR) modes, each allowing detection of either direct or indirect influence of high-power NovoFEL light (THz and mid-IR) on the spin system under study. The optics components including two parabolic mirrors, shutters, optical chopper and multimodal waveguide allow the light of NovoFEL to be directly fed into the EPR resonator.
