We report two cases of myocarditis complicating acute schistosomiasis in returning travelers. Treatment with corticosteroids led to full recovery in both cases. Although the pathophysiology of this complication remains unclear, we recommend treating such patients with corticosteroids rather than praziquantel, which can be associated with clinical deterioration.

Background: Chronic schistosomiasis causes multiple organ and multiple system diseases, especially the digestive system. Schistosome eggs are mainly deposited in the stomach, liver and colorectal, but a few eggs are deposited in the appendix and cause disease. At present, there are few studies on schistosomal appendicitis.

Praziquantel resistance in schistosomes: a brief report.

Front Parasitol

Department of Biology and Chemistry, School of Health Sciences, Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA, United States.

Schistosomiasis is a group of both acute and chronic parasitic trematode infections of the genus . Research into schistosomiasis has been minimal, leading to its classification as a neglected tropical disease, yet more than 140 million people are infected with schistosomes globally. There are no treatments available for early-stage infections, schistosomal dermatitis, or Katayama syndrome, other than symptomatic control with steroids and antihistamines, as the maturing organisms seem to be mostly resistant to typical antiparasitics.

Pharmacological blockade of infection chronification modulates oxy-inflammation and prevents the activation of stress-induced premature senescence markers in schistosomiasis.

Chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and DNA damage are observed in schistosomiasis and premature aging. However, the potential of these events to trigger stress-induced premature senescence (SIPS) throughout schistosomiasis progression remains overlooked, especially in response to the first-line pharmacological treatment. Thus, we investigated the relationship between oxidative stress and SIPS sentinel markers in untreated Schistosoma mansoni-infected mice and those receiving praziquantel (Pz)-based reference treatment.

Impact of acute schistosomiasis mansoni and concurrent type 1 diabetes on pancreatic architecture in mice.

It is not well understood how type 1 diabetes (T1D) and concomitant acute schistosomiasis mansoni affect pancreatic architecture. Male Swiss mice were administered streptozotocin (single 100 mg/kg i.p.
