Deuterium bromide (DBr) is expanded from a pulsed jet into a vacuum and a synchronized pulsed laser causes photodissociation of some of the DBr molecules to produce primarily (approximately 85%) ground-state bromine atoms ((2)P(3/2)) and fast D atoms. The latter collide with the cold DBr molecules and react to produce molecular deuterium (D(2)) via two possible channels, the adiabatic channel D(2)+Br((2)P(3/2)) and the nonadiabatic channel D(2)+Br*((2)P(1/2)), which are asymptotically separated in energy by the spin-orbit splitting (0.457 eV) of the bromine atom. Ion images are recorded for D(2)(v'=1, J'=16, 18-21), D(2)(v'=2, J'=6,7, 10-12, 14-16), and D(2)(v'=3, J'=2-5) for various collision energies. For the nonadiabatic production of spin-orbit-excited Br* in the D+DBr reaction for the conditions studied we estimate that this channel contributes 1% or less.

We propose a mechanism for substituent-responsive reactivities of p-quinodimethane derivatives with four ester groups through their hierarchical and asymmetric assembly modes. Four asymmetric 7,8,8-tris(methoxycarbonyl)-p-quinodimethanes with a 7-positioned ethoxycarbonyl (2 a(H)), 2'-fluoroethoxycarbonyl (2 b(F)), 2'-chloroethoxycarbonyl (2 c(Cl)), or 2'-bromoethoxycarbonyl (2 d(Br)) were synthesized and crystallized. 2 a(H), 2 b(F) and 2 d(Br) afforded only one shape crystal, while 2 c(Cl) did two polymorphic 2 c(Cl)-α and 2 c(Cl)-β.

Study Objectives: The central disorders of hypersomnolence (CDH) manifest with daytime sleepiness, often accompanied by cognitive symptoms. Objective tests characterizing cognitive dysfunction may have diagnostic utility. Further, because some people with CDH report worsening cognition upon awakening, cognitive testing before and after napping may provide additional diagnostic information.

Chemical activation experiments and computational methods have been used to study the unimolecular reactions of CHCHBr and CDCHFBr with 90 and 93 kcal mol of vibrational energy, respectively. The four-centered elimination reactions of HBr and DBr are the dominant reactions; however, 2,1-DF, 1,1-HBr, and 1,1-HF reactions are also observed from CDCHFBr. The main focus was to search for the role of the CD(F)C:HBr adduct in the 1,1-HBr elimination for comparison with carbene adducts in 1,1-HX(Y) elimination from RCHXY (X,Y = Cl and F) molecules.

Although the addition of acid halides across olefins is well-studied, limitations remain with a number of substrate classes that possess leaving groups, polyunsaturation, and acid-sensitive moieties, particularly polyenes prone to cyclization. The process is also challenging when conducted on a small scale, and moreover, methods for the addition of their deuterated counterparts typically require special techniques, especially when control of stoichiometry is required. Herein is described a readily synthesized and handled reagent class which can accomplish the controlled and selective Markovnikov addition of both HCl and HBr across several alkene classes under mild reaction conditions tolerant of diverse functionality.

Dicyanamide [N(CN)2(-)] is a common anionic component of ionic liquids, several of which have shown hypergolic reactivity upon mixing with white-fuming nitric acid. In this study, we explore the thermochemistry of dicyanamide and its reactivity with nitric acid and other molecules to gain insight into the initial stages of the hypergolic phenomenon. We have developed and utilized an electrospray ion source for our selected ion flow tube (SIFT) to generate the dicyanamide anion.
