The significance of identifying early non-cavitated carious lesions and monitoring the lesion extent has led to increasing prospects for prevention, early diagnosis, and implementation of conservative treatments. This paper emphasizes the importance of speckle reduction and possible lesion segmentation options of optical coherence tomography (OCT) images prior to caries detection. First, a comparison of popular speckle reduction filters is presented. These filtering algorithms were evaluated to measure the ability of different methods for reducing background noise from raw images. Both qualitative and quantitative results (signal-to-noise ratio, contrast-to-noise ratio) are reported. Image segmentation is then applied to multiple tooth images. With proper thresholding, high intensity response regions are outlined with the possibility of assessing caries and monitoring its regression. Our results show that a rotating kernel transformation (RKT) filter with 9x9 kernel size provides a good compromise between noise reduction yet preserving the pathological features of interest as required for subsequent feature segmentation analyses.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how electroacupuncture (EA) affects irisin secretion and its role in recovering brain function and blood vessel health after a stroke in rats.
  • The research showed that EA increased irisin levels significantly after seven days and improved neurobehavioral function while reducing brain damage and enhancing blood flow and vascular growth.
  • These beneficial effects of EA were weakened when the gene responsible for irisin production was silenced, suggesting that irisin plays a critical role in EA’s therapeutic effects on brain recovery.

Conventional Fourier domain Optical Coherence Tomography (FD-OCT) systems depend on resampling into a wavenumber () domain to extract the depth profile. This either necessitates additional hardware resources or amplifies the existing computational complexity. Moreover, the OCT images also suffer from speckle noise, due to systemic reliance on low-coherence interferometry.

Background: Immunothrombosis is the process by which the coagulation cascade interacts with the innate immune system to control infection. However, the formation of clots within the brain vasculature can be detrimental to the host. Recent work has demonstrated that Toxoplasma gondii infects and lyses central nervous system (CNS) endothelial cells that form the blood-brain barrier (BBB).

Speckle Strain Analysis of Left Ventricular Dysfunction in Paediatric Patients with Bicuspid Aortic Valve-A Pilot Study.

Background/objectives: Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is a prevalent congenital heart defect that continues to present a significant challenge in the management of paediatric patients. The assessment of left ventricle systolic function is typically conducted through the measurement of the left ventricular ejection fraction. Currently, left ventricle global longitudinal strain (LV GLS) is regarded as a more sensitive indicator, enabling the quantitative assessment of global and segmental ventricular function through the determination of myocardial deformation.

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is the most common complication in pregnancy, representing a serious risk for the mother and fetus. Identifying new biomarkers to ameliorate the screening and improving GDM diagnosis and treatment is crucial. During the last decade, a few studies have used speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) for assessing the myocardial deformation properties of fetuses (FGDM) and infants (IGDM) of GDM women, providing not univocal results.
