Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) primarily affects organs that are abundant in elastic fibers, such as the skin, eye and blood vessels, and may eventually cause loss of vision or cardiovascular disease (CVD). Because CVD is a potentially life-threatening complication, its early detection is important for improving the quality of life of PXE patients. To determine the relationship between the distribution of skin and mucous membrane lesions and the prevalence of CVD in patients with PXE, we examined 14 PXE cases who presented between 2004 and 2007. All patients had angioid streaks (AS) and positive pathological findings. The skin lesions in PXE patients are distributed discontinuously and thus the degrees of skin involvement were assessed by determining the presence or absence of PXE skin and mucous membrane lesions in six sites (oral mucosa, neck, periumbilical region, cubital fossa, axillae and inguinal regions). Each site was given a binary score (i.e. present = 1, absent = 0) irrespective of severity and the scores were summed to yield a total distribution score (potential range of 0-6). Four cases had PXE-associated CVD. Their mean distribution score was 5.7, which was significantly higher than the score of the cases without CVD (1.8) (P = 0.0049). There was also significant correlation between the high distribution score (P = 0.0053) as well as CVD (P = 0.029) with the maximum width of AS. A higher distribution score and the presence of oral mucosal lesions were associated with CVD. This scoring method may be useful for predicting the presence of CVD in PXE patients.

Phage therapy uses viruses (phages) against antibiotic resistance. Tailoring treatments to specific patient strains requires stocks of various highly concentrated purified phages. It, therefore, faces challenges: titration duration and specificity to a phage/bacteria couple; purification affecting stability; and highly concentrated suspensions tending to aggregate.

Prediction and discovery of new materials with desired properties are at the forefront of quantum science and technology research. A major bottleneck in this field is the computational resources and time complexity related to finding new materials from ab initio calculations. In this work, an effective and robust deep learning-based model is proposed by incorporating persistent homology with graph neural network which offers an accuracy of and an F1 score of in classifying topological versus non-topological materials, outperforming the other state-of-the-art classifier models.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between the distribution and severity of hypertonicity and spasticity on walking speed in people with neurological injuries.
Material/methods: This cross-sectional observation cohort study used the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) and Modified Tardieu Scale (MTS) to assess hypertonicity and spasticity of the gastrocnemius, soleus, hamstrings and quadriceps. Participants were classified as having a distal (gastrocnemius and/or soleus), proximal (hamstrings and/or quadriceps) or mixed distribution of hypertonicity or spasticity.

The supervision of novel psychoactive substances (NPSs) is a global problem, and the regulation of NPSs was heavily relied on identifying structural matches in established NPSs databases. However, violators could circumvent legal oversight by altering the side chain structure of recognized NPSs and the existing methods cannot overcome the inaccuracy and lag of supervision. In this study, we propose a scaffold and transformer-based NPS generation and Screening (STNGS) framework to systematically identify and evaluate potential NPSs.

Background: Despite advancements in valve implantation devices, vascular access complications (VAC) remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality for those undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). We describe pre-operative imaging analysis of the aortoiliac and femoral arterial beds using the TransAtlantic intersociety consensus (TASC) score, ilio-femoral tortuosity, and procedural characteristics to identify anatomic risk factors predictive of VAC in TAVR.
Methods: Consecutive patients undergoing TAVR from 2012 to 2022 at a single North Dakota hospital were retrospectively reviewed.
