X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at 3.5 keV photon energy, in combination with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, is used to follow the formation of the interface between rhodium and carbon nanotubes. Rh nucleates at defect sites, whether initially present or induced by oxygen-plasma treatment. More uniform Rh cluster dispersion is observed on plasma-treated CNTs. Experimental results are compared to DFT calculations of small Rh clusters on pristine and defective graphene. While Rh interacts as strongly with the carbon as Ti, it is less sensitive to the presence of oxygen, suggesting it as a good candidate for nanotube contacts.

Chalcogen Bonding Catalysis Enables Ring-Opening of Cyclopropene and Ring Expansion of Aryl Ketones.

Catalytic transformation of carbene species constitutes a fundamental part in organic synthesis, and the research in this direction has been dominated by transition metals while organic catalysts are difficult to mimic such transition-metal-like reactivity. It would significantly advance carbene chemistry if organic catalysts enable achieving classical metal-carbene approaches otherwise unrealizable reactions. Herein, we report that chalcogen bonding catalysis can solve reactivity problem to achieve an elusive Buchner ring expansion of aryl ketones appending a cyclopropene moiety as carbene precursor.

An efficient method for construction of various fluorenones has been achieved via Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation/[4 + 2] annulation/aromatization sequences of simple and readily available enaminones and 1,3-dienes. This protocol showed good substrate compatibility as an array of structurally and electronically diverse fluorenones prepared efficiently in moderate to good yields and preparative scale utility showing very good efficiency in the late-stage functionalization of complex valuable molecules.

Electrochemical alkaline water electrolysis offers significant economic advantages; however, these benefits are hindered by the high kinetic energy barrier of the water dissociation step and the sluggish kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. Herein, the ensemble effect of binary types of Rh single atoms (Rh-N and Rh-O) on TiO-embedded carbon nanofiber (Rh-TiO/CNF) is reported, which serves as potent active sites for high-performance HER in anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE). Density functional theory (DFT) analyses support the experimental observations, highlighting the critical role of binary types of Rh single atoms facilitated by the TiO sites.

An Interstitial Boron Inserted Metastable Hexagonal Rh Nanocrystal for Efficient Hydrogen Oxidation Electrocatalysis.

Constructing metastable phase structure plays an important role in changing the physicochemical properties and improving the catalytic performance of nanocrystals. Unfortunately, the synthesis of metastable phase metallic nanocrystals is highly challenging, mainly due to the thermodynamically unstable ground-state. Here, we report a synthesis of unconventional metastable hexagonal rhodium nanocrystal (B-Rh/C) via interstitial boron insertion.

Accurate and complete microkinetic models (MKMs) are powerful for anticipating the behavior of complex chemical systems at different operating conditions. In heterogeneous catalysis, they can be further used for the rapid development and screening of new catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) is often used to calculate the parameters used in MKMs with relatively high fidelity.
