Multicompartmentalized micro- and nanocapsules allow simultaneous delivery of several vectors or biomolecules; they are the next generation of carriers with increased complexity. Here we overview multicompartment micro- and nanocapsules and present a road-map for future developments in the field. Four basic building block structures are demonstrated, three isotropic: concentric, pericentric, and innercentric, and one anisotropic: acentric. As an elaborate implementation of multicompartmentalization, an enzyme-catalyzed reaction inside the same capsule carrying both an enzyme and a substrate is shown. Applications of multicompartmentalized microcapsules for simultaneous multiple drug delivery in bio-medicine are discussed.

High-performance color-changing compounds, recognized as prominent smart materials, dynamically alter their color in response to external environmental stimuli. However, existing compounds exhibit limited responsiveness and color diversity, presenting challenges in the development of textiles responsive to multiple stimuli. This research introduces a novel design for dual-responsive color-changing microcapsules, employing a Pickering emulsion template method.

In this work, a self-powered microsensor platform based on enzyme biofuel cells (EBFCs) was developed for intelligent monitoring of disease markers miRNA-451. The cascade catalysis system constructed by using the strategy of enzyme-like ZIF-8 nanocapsule incorporation with biological enzymes, which could simultaneously take into account the specificity of biological enzymes and the high activity of nano-enzymes, significantly promoted the electron transfer between glucose and the bio-anode surface, and improved the sensitivity and stability of the sensing system. Meanwhile, the target-triggered hybridization chain reaction (HCR) amplification strategy to achieve exponential signal amplification based on accurate recognition, and jointly improve the detection sensitivity.

Multiscale particle size functional pesticide carriers can provide more efficient protection for plants, but this protection is difficult to achieve via single-scale formulation technology. This study presents a novel one-step method for the preparation of lignin-based micro/nanocapsules with controllable proportions within a unified system. This strategy enables the adjustment of the proportion of nanocapsules to between 18.
