Introduction: Recent work identified members of the evolutionarily conserved coronin protein family as key regulators of cell population size. This work originated ~25 years ago through the identification, by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, of coronin 1 as a host protein involved in the virulence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We here describe the journey from a spot on a 2D gel to the recent realization that coronin proteins represent key controllers of eukaryotic cell population sizes, using ever more sophisticated proteomic techniques.

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common vascular disease with a significant global burden, influenced by multiple factors, such as genetic, environmental, and immune components. Immune responses and shifts in immune cell profiles are closely linked to the development and progression of VTE, yet current studies are limited by confounding factors and reverse causation. To address these limitations, this study uses Mendelian randomization to explore the causal relationship between immune cell traits and VTE, aiming to provide insights into underlying mechanisms.

Background: A recent study conducted by the laboratory of the first author revealed that major depression is composed of two distinct subtypes: major dysmood disorder (MDMD) and simple dysmood disorder (SDMD). The latter is a less severe phenotype with fewer aberrant biological pathways. MDMD, but not SDMD, patients were identified to have highly sensitized cytokine/growth factor networks using stimulated whole blood cultures.

Background And Objective: Using electrophysiological simulations and machine learning to predict drug proarrhythmia risk has gained popularity due to its effectiveness. The leading in silico drug assessment system mainly uses a single biomarker (qNet) to predict proarrhythmia risk, offering good performance and straightforward interpretation. Other advanced classifiers incorporating additional physiological biomarkers provide better predictive capabilities but are less intuitive.

The retinal Schiff base is a chromophore of significant biological relevance, as it is responsible for capturing sunlight in rhodopsins, which are photoactive proteins found in various living organisms. Additionally, this chromophore is subjected to various mechanical forces in different proteins, which alter its structure and, consequently, its properties. To thoroughly understand the mechanical response limits of the retinal excitation energy, a simple first-order formalism has been developed to quantify the chromophore's optimal mechanical response to applied external forces (on the order of tens of pN).
