The newly established difructose anhydride IV (DFA IV) production system is comprised of the effective production of levan from sucrose by Serratia levanicum NN, the conversion of the levan into DFA IV by levan fructotransferase from Arthrobacter nicotinovorans GS-9, which is highly expressed in an Escherichiacoli transformant, and a practical purification step. The chemical properties of DFA IV were also investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • Exo-fructanase enzymes break down fructans like levan and inulin, producing fructose, and this study focuses on a newly identified enzyme, Mle3A, from Microbacterium sp. XL1.
  • Mle3A has a unique structure with several functional domains and shows optimal activity at temperatures between 50-55 °C and a pH of 5.5, effectively hydrolyzing various sugars including inulin.
  • The enzyme's activity is significantly boosted by certain metal ions, particularly manganese, and it can efficiently convert inulin into high fructose syrup, making it a promising tool for producing valuable chemicals from inulin biomass.

Levan biopolymer and levan-type fructooligosaccharides (L-FOSs) are β-2,6-linked fructans that have been used as non-digestible dietary fiber and prebiotic oligosaccharides in food and cosmeceutical applications. In this study, we explore the operon responsible for levan and L-FOSs production in HL12. Presented is the first genomic perspective on sucrose utilization and the levan biosynthesis pathway in this bacterium.

Nanoparticles composed of Levan and Dolutegravir (DTG) have been successfully synthesized using a spray drying procedure specifically designed for milk/food admixture applications. Levan, obtained from the microorganism Bacillus subtilis, was thoroughly characterized using MALDI-TOF and solid-state NMR technique to confirm its properties. In the present study, this isolated Levan was utilized as a carrier for drug delivery applications.

Endotoxins released from poultry feces have been associated with impaired human health. Because endotoxins are released from gram-negative intestinal bacteria, it was hypothesized that dietary strategies may influence endotoxin excretion via modulation of gut microbiota. We therefore tested dietary strategies that could potentially reduce cloacal endotoxin levels in broiler chickens.
