Environmental pollutants such as TCDD and tetraethyl lead are extremely toxic and related with pulmonary disease development. Lung mitochondria are primary cellular targets for dioxins exposure-induced toxicity. TCDD showed a delay in the repolarization after a phosphorylative cycle and a decrease on state 3 respiration, suggesting alterations at the phosphorylative system level. The ATPase activity showed no differences between control and lung mitochondria incubated with TCDD, implying alterations in other components of the phosphorylative system. Tetraethyl lead also showed a delay in the repolarization after a phosphorylative cycle and a decrease on RCR. These data suggest that lung mitochondria incubated with TCDD and tetraethyl lead showed impaired mitochondrial function, reflecting the loss of oxidative phosphorylation capacity.

Article Synopsis
  • Dental resin composites often fail due to microcracks that can lead to larger cracks and restoration issues.
  • The study focuses on enhancing self-healing dental resins through the optimization of microcapsules that release healing agents when damaged.
  • Functionalized microcapsules with silanizing agents showed better healing efficiency, particularly the bilayer approach using TEOS and MPTMS, achieving up to 35% toughness recovery compared to standard microcapsules.

Sepsis is a syndrome of systemic inflammatory response resulting from infection, which can lead to severe lung injury. Histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4) is a key protein known to regulate a wide range of cellular processes. This study was designed to investigate the role of HDAC4 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced alveolar epithelial cell injury as well as to disclose its potential molecular mechanisms.

Article Synopsis
  • The Società Lavorazioni Organiche Inorganiche (SLOI) operated in Trento, Italy, from 1941 to 1978, producing tetraethyl lead under poor working conditions, leading to numerous health issues among workers.
  • A formal epidemiological study was initiated to assess the mortality rates of 580 male employees, revealing a 3.8% loss to follow-up and higher mortality rates compared to the local population.
  • Preliminary findings show 295 deaths in the SLOI sub-cohort between 1986 and 2016, with a standardized mortality ratio of 1.29, indicating increased mortality that may be linked to occupational exposure, pending further investigation into causes of death.

A series of mixed-anion Fe(NHtrz)(BF)(SiF) spin crossover complexes is obtained modifying the reaction time but also using an increase amount of tetraethyl orthosilicate as the source for the production and the incorporation of SiF competing with the BF anions present in the mother solution. The increase of the SiF anion inclusion to the detriment of the BF counterpart induces a shift of the temperature transition toward high temperatures leading to interesting bistability properties around room temperature with spanning from 300 K to 325 K. Moreover, the implementation of a solid-liquid post synthetic modification approach from the Fe(NHtrz)(BF) parent complex with identical TEOS proportions and under certain experimental conditions lead systematically to the same Fe(NHtrz)(BF)(SiF) composition.

Mesoporous silica nanoparticle-decorated graphene oxide nanosheets (MSiO-GO) were synthesized and characterized for the active removal of lead (Pb) from the water. MSiO NPs were prepared via an ultrasonication method using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), and GO sheets were obtained via a modified Hummers' method. X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy specified the composition of MSiO NPs and GO sheets.
