Composition depth profiling of HfO(2) (2.5 nm)/SiON (1.6 nm)/Si(001) was performed by three diffetent analytical techniques: high-resolution Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (HRBS), angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AR-XPS) and high-resolution elastic recoil detection (HR-ERD). By comparing these results we found the following: (1) HRBS generally provides accurate depth profiles. However, care must be taken in backgroud subtraction for depth profiling of light elements. (2) In the standard AR-XPS analysis, a simple exponential formula is often used to calculate the photoelectron escape probability. This simple formula, however, cannot be used for the precise depth profiling. (2) Although HR-ERD is the most reliable technique for the depth profiling of light elements, it may suffer from multiple scattering, which deteriorates the depth resolution, and also may cause a large background.

Review of Applications of Microneedling in Melasma.

J Cosmet Dermatol

January 2025

Department of Dermatology, Peking University Shenzhen Hospital, Shenzhen, China.

Background: Melasma, a common skin pigmentation disease, can negatively impact patients' mental health, social interactions, and physical appearance. Although we now have several treatments accessible, such as medicines, chemical peels, and phototherapy, which can help ease symptoms to some extent, the requirement for a long-term effective and safe treatment for patients is far from met. In the face of this problem, microneedling, as an innovative treatment, provides a new avenue for treating melasma.

Natural terpenes II. Concentration-dependent profile of effects on dynamic organization of biological and model membranes.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

December 2024

Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Facultad de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales, Departamento de Química, Cátedra de Química Biológica, Córdoba, Argentina; CONICET, Instituto de Investigaciones Biológicas y Tecnológicas (IIByT). Córdoba, Argentina. Electronic address:

Monoterpenes (MTs), the major constituents of plant essential oils, cover a broad spectrum of biological activities through their interaction with biomembranes. MTs are highly hydrophobic substances with a net electrical dipole, but are not clearly amphipathic. As a result, they aggregate at increasing concentrations in aqueous media, and in membrane environments their behavior changes from dynamics modulators to disruptors.

High-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) remains the most lethal gynecological malignancy, and there is still an unmet medical need to deepen basic research on its origins and mechanisms of progression. Patient-derived organoids of high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC-PDO) are a powerful model to study the complexity of ovarian cancer as they maintain, in vitro, the mutational profile and cellular architecture of the cancer tissue. Genetic modifications by lentiviral transduction allow novel insights into signaling pathways and the potential identification of biomarkers regarding the evolution of drug resistance.

Whey fermentation could produce bioactive substances with immunomodulatory effects, metabolic syndrome modulation, and antioxidant properties, thereby imparting functional characteristics to products and facilitating the development of novel foods with health-promoting potential. A non-targeted metabolomics approach using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was employed to investigate changes in the metabolite profiles of whey fermented by strain KM812 over varying fermentation durations. The findings demonstrated a progressive enrichment of metabolites over time.

Digital-Tier Strategy Improves Newborn Screening for Glutaric Aciduria Type 1.

Int J Neonatal Screen

December 2024

Engineering Mathematics and Computing Lab (EMCL), Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR), Heidelberg University, 69120 Heidelberg, Germany.

Glutaric aciduria type 1 (GA1) is a rare inherited metabolic disease increasingly included in newborn screening (NBS) programs worldwide. Because of the broad biochemical spectrum of individuals with GA1 and the lack of reliable second-tier strategies, NBS for GA1 is still confronted with a high rate of false positives. In this study, we aim to increase the specificity of NBS for GA1 and, hence, to reduce the rate of false positives through machine learning methods.
