With the comprehensive study and complete sequencing of the Haemophilus influenzae genome in 1995 came the term 'genomics' and the beginning of the 'omics' era. Since this time, several analogous fields, such as transcriptomics and proteomics, have emerged. While growth and advancement in these fields have increased understanding of microbial virulence, the study of bacterial glycomes is still in its infancy and little is known concerning their role in host-pathogen interactions. Bacterial glycomics is challenging owing to the diversity of glyco-conjugate molecules, vast array of unusual sugars and limited number of analytical approaches available. However, recent advances in glycomics technologies offer the potential for exploration and characterization of both the structures and functions of components of bacterial glycomes in a systematic manner. Such characterization is a prerequisite for discerning the role of bacterial glycans in the interaction between host defences and bacterial virulence factors.

Cyclic diguanosine monophosphate (c-di-GMP) is a ubiquitous bacterial secondary messenger with diverse functions. A previous Escherichia coli proteome microarray identified that c-di-GMP binds to the 23S rRNA methyltransferases RlmI and RlmE. Here we show that c-di-GMP inhibits RlmI activity in rRNA methylation assays, and that it modulates ribosome assembly in the presence of kanamycin.

Background: Bariatric surgery is the most long-term effective treatment option for severe obesity. The role of gut microbiome (GM) in either the development of obesity or in response to obesity management strategies has been a matter of debate. This study aims to compare the impact of two of the most popular procedures, sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (GB), on metabolic syndrome parameters and gut bacterial microbiome and in systemic immuno-inflammatory response.

Bacterial genomes have regions known as defence islands that encode diverse systems to protect against phage infection. Although genetic elements that capture and store gene cassettes in Vibrio species, called integrons, are known to play an important role in bacterial adaptation, a role in phage defence had not been defined. Here we combine bioinformatic and molecular techniques to show that the chromosomal integron of Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a hotspot for anti-phage defence genes.

Aim: This study was dedicated to investigating the role of sulfur metabolic processes in sulfate-reducing bacteria in plant resistance to heavy metal contamination.
Methods And Results: We constructed sulfate-reducing bacterial communities based on the functional properties of sulfate-reducing strains, and then screened out the most effective sulfate-reducing bacterial community SYN1, that prevented Cd and Pb uptake in rice through hydroponic experiment. This community lowered Cd levels in the roots and upper roots by 36.

Introduction: Gut microbiota alterations have been implicated in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), yet the mechanisms linking these changes to ASD pathophysiology remain unclear.
Objectives: This study utilized a multi-omics approach to uncover mechanisms linking gut microbiota to ASD by examining microbial diversity, bacterial metaproteins, associated metabolic pathways and host proteome.
Methods: The gut microbiota of 30 children with severe ASD and 30 healthy controls was analyzed.
