A straightforward general synthetic access to N-aryl-1,3-dithiolo[4,5-c]pyrrole-2-thione derivatives 6 from acetylenedicarbaldehyde monoacetal is depicted. In addition to their potentiality as precursors to dithioalkyl-pyrrole derivatives, thiones 6 are key building blocks to N-aryl monopyrrolo-tetrathiafulvalene (MPTTF) derivatives 10. X-ray structures of four of these thiones intermediates, reminiscent of the corresponding MPTTF derivatives, are provided. When the aryl group is a binding pyridyl unit, the MPTTF derivative 10a can coordinate M(II) salts (M = Pt, Pd). The first examples of metal-directed orthogonal MPTTF-based dimers 11-14, obtained through coordination of 10a to cis-blocked square planar Pt or Pd complexes are described. Studies on the parameters influencing the dimer construction are presented, as well as first recognition properties of the resulting electron-rich clip for C(60).

We have investigated and quantified the role that the glycol chain length has on the strength of the noncovalent bonding interactions taking place between cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT) and five different monopyrrolo-tetrathiafulvalene (MPTTF) derivatives that only differ in the length of the N-substituted glycol chain. The MPTTF derivatives were used to form [2]pseudorotaxanes by mixing them with CBPQT. The binding constants (K) associated with the complexation process leading to the formation of the [2]pseudorotaxanes were obtained using the UV-vis-NIR dilution method and the [2]pseudorotaxanes were characterized structurally using H NMR spectroscopy.

The electron-donor and unique redox properties of the tetrathiafulvalene (TTF, 1) moiety have led to diverse applications in many areas of chemistry. Monopyrrolotetrathiafulvalenes (MPTTFs, 4) and bispyrrolotetrathiafulvalenes (BPTTFs, 5) are useful structural motifs and have found widespread use in fields such as supramolecular chemistry and molecular electronics. Protocols enabling the synthesis of functionalised MPTTFs and BPTTFs are therefore of broad interest.

A series of mono- (MPTTF) and bis(pyrrolo)tetrathiafulvalene (BPTTF) derivatives tethered to one or two C60 moieties was synthesized and characterized. The synthetic strategy for these dumbbell-shaped compounds was based on a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction between aldehyde-functionalized MPTTF/BPTTF derivatives, two different tailor-made amino acids, and C60. Electronic communication between the MPTTF/BPTTF units and the C60 moieties was studied by a variety of techniques including cyclic voltammetry and absorption spectroscopy.

Binding studies between triethylene glycol-substituted monopyrrolotetrathiafulvalene derivatives and cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene).

The synthesis of several pi-electron-donating monopyrrolotetrathiafulvalene (MPTTF) derivatives, which conceptually can be divided into three classes containing none, one, or two triethylene glycol (TEG) substituents, is described. In all cases, the complexation between the pi-electron donating MPTTF unit and the pi-electron-deficient tetracationic cyclophane cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT(4+)) has been investigated using UV-vis dilution techniques. The results reveal that the strength of the binding between MPTTF derivatives and CBPQT(4+) is directly correlated to the pi-electron donating properties of the MPTTF derivatives.
