Evergreen forest communities distributed within 1580-2600 m above sea level (asl) in Kumaun Himalaya were studied. Quercus leucotrichophora A. Campus, Q. floribunda Lindl. ex Rehder Q. semecarpifolia J.E. Smith and Pinus roxburghii Sarg. are the dominant tree species in banj-oak, tilonj-oak, kharsu-oak and chir-pine forests, respectively. Total density for tree, shrub and herb layer varied from 3.7 to 10.5 (individual 100 m(-2)), 2.0 to 38.8 (individual 100 m(-2)) and 5.5 to 44.0 (individual m(-2)), respectively. A total of five forests types (27 stands) were identified in the field on the basis of species richness and species diversity by applying polar ordination method. The diversity value fortree, shrub and herb layer ranged from 0 to 3.62, 0.36 to 3.85 and 1.23 to 4.21, respectively. Present study indicates the spatial patterns of vegetation in different forest communities at different altitudes.

Forbidden links are likely to make ecological communities less robust to species extinctions, stressing the need to assess their prevalence. Here, we used a dataset of plant-hummingbird interactions, coupled with a Bayesian hierarchical model, to assess the importance of exploitation barriers in determining species interactions.

Background: The immature lungs of very preterm infants are exposed to supraphysiologic oxygen, contributing to bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung disease that is the most common morbidity of prematurity. While the microbiota significantly influences neonatal health, the relationship between the intestinal microbiome, particularly micro-eukaryotic members such as fungi and yeast, and lung injury severity in newborns remains unknown.
Results: Here, we show that the fungal microbiota modulates hyperoxia-induced lung injury severity in very low birth weight premature infants and preclinical pseudohumanized and altered fungal colonization mouse models.

The ecological niche separation of microbial interactions in forest ecosystems is critical to maintaining ecological balance and biodiversity and has yet to be comprehensively explored in microbial ecology. This study investigated the impacts of soil properties on microbial interactions and carbon metabolism potential in forest soils across 67 sites in China. Using redundancy analysis and random forest models, we identified soil pH and dissolved organic matter (DOM) aromaticity as the primary drivers of microbial interactions, representing abiotic conditions and resource niches, respectively.

The socioeconomic burden of hip fractures, the most severe osteoporotic fracture outcome, is increasing and the current clinical risk assessment lacks sensitivity. This study aimed to develop a method for improved prediction of hip fracture by incorporating measurements of bone microstructure and composition derived from high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT). In a prospective cohort study of 3028 community-dwelling women aged 75 to 80, all participants answered questionnaires and underwent baseline examinations of anthropometrics and bone by dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and HR-pQCT.
