Objectives: A significant factor in achieving satisfactory adhesion of restorative resins to dentine substrate is the method by which the dentine surface is treated before an adhesive is applied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of deproteinization on microleakage around gingival third resin restorations.

Materials And Methods: Standardised Class V preparations were made on randomly selected intact upper and lower human molars. These were treated in one of five ways (no treatment, enamel etch only, total etch, total etch followed by deproteinization, and deproteinization only) and then adhesively bonded using either an acetone or ethanol based bonding system. The samples were first immersed in 2% methylene blue dye and then 35% nitric acid, for 72 hours each. The solutions were filtered and centrifuged, and the supernatant was used to determine absorbance in a spectrophotometer at 670 nm. The results were recorded as a measure of transmission of light of the test solutions.

Results: The results were subjected to multiple comparisons amongst groups, using anova. There was a statistically significant difference between all treatment groups for the two different bonding systems used. The experimental groups, total etch alone and total etch followed by deproteinization showed statistically significant differences, as compared to all other groups. However, although the total etch group showed a decrease in microleakage, when compared to the total etch followed by deproteinization group, this was not statistically significant.

Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, collagen removal may be important to reduce microleakage whilst using acetone based adhesive systems and it may not influence the amount of microleakage for ethanol or water based adhesive systems.

Nanoparticles Induced Biomimetic Remineralization of Acid-Etched Dentin.

J Dent (Shiraz)

Dept. Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, St.Joseph Dental College, Duggirala, Eluru, Andra Pradesh, India.

Statement Of The Problem: Dentin bonding with etch-and-rinse adhesives involves demineralizing the 5-8µm of the surface dentin to create micro space for resin infiltration. The presence of continuous fluid movement in dentin tubules and positive pulpal pressure prevents complete water replacement by resin monomers. This results in areas of demineralized dentin, which contain collagen fibers without resin infiltration.

Objective: Evaluating immediate and delayed micro shear bond strength (µSBS) between composite resin and glass ionomer cements using different adhesive systems and mechanical surface treatment.

Materials And Methods: A total of 240 specimens of glass ionomer restorative materials were divided into two groups: Resin Modified Glass Ionomer Cement (RMGIC) namely Riva Light Cure and Conventional Glass Ionomer Cement (CGIC) namely Riva Self Cure. These were subdivided into immediate (24 h) and delayed (3 months) storage and further divided into smooth, medium, and rough surface treatment with either total etch (TE) or self-etch (SE) adhesive strategies.

Use of fertilizers in agriculture soils is a worldwide practice to increase the yield of agricultural products. Fertilizers may contain radioactive elements may be present along with plant's nutrients in fertilizers. Migrated radioactive elements from the fertilized soils can find their entry into the environment and human body through several ways, which may lead to induce a potential radiological risk to human health.

Article Synopsis
  • A systematic review was conducted to see if acid etching would improve the bond strength of universal adhesives (UAs) on caries-affected dentin, both before and after aging.
  • Researchers analyzed 26 studies focusing mainly on mild UAs, finding that acid etching had no significant effect on their bond strength (p > 0.05).
  • The study concluded that aging significantly weakened the bond strength of mild UAs to caries-affected dentin, with bond strength being notably lower compared to sound dentin (p < 0.05).
