Intraoperative assessment of microimplantation-induced acute brain inflammation with titanium oxynitride-based plasmonic biosensor.

Biosens Bioelectron

November 2024

Institute of Medical Robotics, School of Biomedical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, 800 Dong Chuan Road, Shanghai, 200240, PR China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Implantable devices for brain-machine interfaces and neurological disorders are growing rapidly, but concerns exist about trauma and long-term safety.
  • This study introduces titanium oxynitride (TiNO) nanofilm as a biosensor that can detect acute inflammatory responses in the brain during micro-neuro-implantation.
  • The TiNO-SPR biosensor is highly sensitive to the inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6, allowing for quick assessments of inflammation during surgeries, which helps improve the safety of invasive procedures.

Zinc-finger CCHC-type containing protein 8 promotes RNA virus replication by suppressing the type-I interferon responses.

J Virol

September 2024

National Key Laboratory of Agricultural Microbiology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan, Hubei, China.

Host cells have evolved an intricate regulatory network to fine tune the type-I interferon responses. However, the full picture of this regulatory network remains to be depicted. In this study, we found that knock out of zinc-finger CCHC-type containing protein 8 (ZCCHC8) impairs the replication of influenza A virus (IAV), Sendai virus (Sev), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), and vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV).

Meningitis is the infection of the meninges, which are connective tissue membranes covering the brain, and it most commonly affects the leptomeninges. Clinically, meningitis may present with fever, neck stiffness, altered mental status, headache, vomiting, and neurological deficits. Encephalitis is an infection of the brain, which usually presents with fever, altered mental status, neurological deficits, and seizure.

One of the viral diseases that affect millions of people around the world, particularly in developing countries, is (JE). In this study, the conserved protein of this virus, that is, non-structural protein 5 (NS5), was used as a target protein for this study, and a compound library of 749 antiviral molecules was screened against NS5. The current study employed machine learning-based virtual screening combined with molecular docking.

An 84-year-old Japanese woman presented with left hemiplegia 8 months after completing chemotherapy for mantle cell lymphoma. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a hyperintense lesion extending from the right parietal lobe to the left parietal lobe. Compared with these MRI results, F-THK5351 PET revealed more extensive accumulation.
