In order to evaluate the application of quinolone as a new photocleavable protecting group, in comparison with coumarin, a series of model phenylalanine conjugates were prepared by reaction with chloromethylated O and N heterocycles. The photophysical properties of the resulting ester conjugates were evaluated as well as the photosensitivity under irradiation at 250, 300, 350, and 419 nm. The results obtained showed that the quinolone conjugates were readily photolysed, with complete release of the amino acid in short irradiation times and could be considered a new addition to the family of photocleavable protecting groups for the carboxylic acid function of amino acids.

Genetic encoding of noncanonical amino acids (ncAAs) with desired functionalities is an invaluable tool for the study of biological processes and the development of therapeutic drugs. However, existing ncAA incorporation strategies are rather time-consuming and have relatively low success rates. Here, we develop a virtual ncAA screener based on the analysis and modeling of the chemical properties of all reported ncAA substrates to virtually determine the recognition potential of candidate ncAAs.

A scaffold design for tendon regeneration has been proposed, which mimics the microstructural features of tendons and provides appropriate mechanical properties. We synthesized a temperature-triggered shape-memory polymer (SMP) using the ring-opening polymerization of polycaprolactone (PCL) with polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a macroinitiator. We fabricated a micropatterned patch using SMP capillary force lithography, which mimicked a native tendon, for providing physical cues and guiding effects.

Background/objectives: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impaired social interaction and repetitive stereotyped behavior. Effective interventions for the core autistic symptoms are currently limited.
Methods: This study employed a valproic acid (VPA)-induced mouse model of ASD to assess the preventative effects of L-proline supplementation on ASD-like behaviors.

Biochar-based fertilizer has potential benefits in improving soil quality and crop yield, but the biological mechanisms of soil microbial enzymes interacting with related metabolisms still need to be further investigated. In this study, we combined enzymology and untargeted metabolomics to investigate how biochar-based fertilizer substitution affects soil quality and crop yield by regulating soil enzymes and metabolites in dry-crop farmland. Our findings showed that biochar-based fertilizer substitution enhanced the activities of enzymes related to carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling, as well as influenced metabolite composition.

Background: Postoperative ileus (POI) is a common postoperative clinical complication that significantly affects postoperative rehabilitation and quality of life in patients and can even produce secondary complications, leading to serious consequences. External treatment using Shenhuang Plaster (SHP) (Shenque acupoint administration) has definite effects and unique advantages in the prevention and treatment of POI, but its mechanism is not completely clear. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic mechanism behind the effect of Shenhuang Plaster applied to the Shenque acupoint on gastrointestinal motility in POI mice based on metabolomics.
