A novel phosphate/oxalate inorganic-organic hybrid material has been prepared to elucidate synthesis and bonding characteristics of iron(III) with both phosphate and organic matter (OM). Such mixed anion bonding of inorganic oxyanions and OM to iron(III) and aluminum(III) in environmental systems has been proposed but not proven, mainly because of the complexity of natural geochemical matrices. The compound reported here with the molecular formula of [C(3)H(12)N(2)](2)[Fe(5)(C(2)O(4))(2)(H(x)PO(4))(8)] (I) was hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). In this new structure, Fe-O octahedra and P-O tetrahedra are connected by corner-sharing to form a 2-D network in the a-b plane. Oxalate anions cross-link these Fe-P layers constructing a 3-D anionic framework. A diprotonated structure-directing template, DAP (1,3-diaminopropane), resides in the oxalate layer of the structure and offsets the negative charge of the anionic framework. Iron K-edge XANES spectra confirmed that the iron in I is Fe(III). The crystal structure of I is used to successfully fit its Fe K-edge EXAFS spectrum, which exhibits spectral signatures that unambiguously identify iron-phosphate and iron-OM bonding. Such molecular spectroscopic features will be invaluable for the evaluation of complex environmental systems. Furthermore, syntheses demonstrated the critical role of the templating amine to mediate whether or not the iron(III) is reduced by the organic acid.

The discharge of sewage effluent is a major source of microbial contamination in drinking water sources, necessitating a comprehensive investigation of its impact on pathogenic bacterial communities. This study utilized full-length 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to identify putative pathogenic bacteria and analyze their community structures in drinking water sources subjected to different levels of fecal pollution: urban rivers with low, moderate, and high sewage effluent mixing ratios, and mountain streams with minimal human impact. The sewage effluent itself was also analyzed.

Based on the observation that urea, water, and ethyl esters (EE) can form gypsum-like mixtures, this study explored the feasibility of employing water as a solvent for urea in the urea complexation method to enrich n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-containing ethyl esters (DHA- EE) from Crypthecodinium cohnii as the material. Under the conditions of a urea/DHA-EE ratio of 3, a water/DHA-EE ratio of 0.75, a mixing temperature of 65℃, and a cooling temperature of 20℃, a concentrate containing over 90% DHA was achieved.

Recent studies suggested intrathecal vasodilator administration as a therapy to mitigate post-ischemic cerebral hypoperfusion following cardiac arrest. We examined the effects of two commonly used intrathecal vasodilators, sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and nicardipine, on cerebral pial microcirculation, cortical tissue oxygen tension (PctO2), and electrocortical activity in the early post-resuscitation period using a porcine model of cardiac arrest. Thirty pigs were resuscitated after 14 min of untreated cardiac arrest.

A comprehensive hydrogeochemical analysis of 156 groundwater samples (106 shallow and 50 deep) was conducted in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. This study addresses a significant research gap by focusing on the hydro-geochemical composition and contamination of groundwater in the Kathmandu Valley, an area with limited detailed assessments. The novelty of this work lies in its comprehensive analysis of both shallow and deep groundwater, particularly concerning the high concentration of contaminants like arsenic, microbial pathogens, and ammonium, which are critical for public health.

Investigate the impact of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) using different photosensitizers (PSs) such as indocyanine green (IG), curcumin (CC), and methylene blue (MB), with or without intracanal application of calcium hydroxide (CH), on the push-out bond strength of glass-fiber posts (GFPs) to intraradicular dentin, the chemical composition of the root substrate, and the sealing of the adhesive interface across different thirds of intraradicular dentin. A total of 112 bovine teeth underwent biomechanical preparation and were divided into eight experimental groups (n = 14 each): Negative control with deionized water; positive control with deionized water + CH; IG group with indocyanine green and infrared laser; IG + CH group; CC group with curcumin and blue LED; CC + CH group; MB group with methylene blue and red laser; and MB + CH group. The push-out bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine (n = 8), and scanning electron microscopy characterized the fracture patterns.
