Recent studies suggest that heterozygous female Fabry disease (FD) patients develop peripheral neuropathy. We used skin biopsy to define somatic and autonomic peripheral nerve characteristics in 21 females with FD who were mainly asymptomatic and had normal renal function. Somatic epidermal and dermal autonomic nerve fiber reductions were found, prevalently in the leg, and no differences were found between symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. Our findings suggest that females with FD, although asymptomatic, may have somatic and autonomic small fiber neuropathy.

Background: The human colon receives 2 L of fluid daily. Small changes in the efficacy of absorption can lead to altered stool consistency with diarrhea or constipation. Drugs and formulations can also alter colonic water, which can be assessed using the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) longitudinal relaxation time constant, T1.

The adoption of pultruded glass fibre-reinforced polymer (pGFRP) composites as a substitute for traditional wooden cross-arms in high transmission towers represents a relatively novel approach. These materials were selected for their high strength-to-weight ratio and lightweight properties. Despite various studies focusing on structures improvement, there still have a significant gap in understanding the deformation characteristics of full-scale cross-arms under actual operational loads.

Electronic address:

Background: Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is a kind of scanning probe technology that enables the obtainment of surface morphology and electrochemical information by recording changes in Faraday current triggered by the movement of probe.

Results: In this work, flexible disk ultramicroelectrode (UME) with highly repeatable geometry are fabricated through a simple and universal strategy that involves vacuum pulling the glass capillaries inserted with platinum wire (gold wire, carbon fiber, etc.), followed by a rapidly heated sealing and polishing process.

Natural extracellular matrices (ECM) provide a more accurate simulation of the cellular growth environment, making them excellent substrate materials for in vitro cell culture. The porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS) is one of the most widely used natural ECM that display superior bioactivity. However, decellularization operations often result in fiber breakage and failure to recover mechanical strength in the SIS.

Sweets and other sugary foods - a scoping review for Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023.

Food Nutr Res

December 2024

Nutritional Epidemiology, Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund University, Malmö, Sweden.

Background: Sweets, chocolate, and sweet bakery products are generally high in energy and added sugar, whereas the levels of essential nutrients and fibre are low. According to sales statistics, the consumption of sweets and chocolate is high in the Nordic and Baltic countries.

Objective: This scoping review describes the totality of evidence for the role of sweets and other sugary foods for health-related outcomes as a basis for setting and updating food-based dietary guidelines in the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023 (NNR2023) project.
