Implementing a large, longitudinal study of any sample is a major undertaking. The challenges are compounded when the study involves multiple sites and a high-risk sample. This article outlines the methodology for the Pathways to Desistance study, a multisite, longitudinal study of serious juvenile offenders, and discusses the key operational decisions with the greatest impact on the study design.

A mediation analysis was performed with perceptual and cognitive mediators to investigate the effect of court procedural justice on subsequent delinquency. The hypothesis tested in this study held that court procedural justice would promote a change in perceived certainty of punishment, a change in perceived certainty would foster change in institutional legitimacy, and institutional legitimacy would lead to a reduction in offending. This two-mediator model was tested in a sample of 1354 (1170 males, 184 females) serious delinquent youth from the Pathways to Desistance study.

Article Synopsis
  • Individuals in the criminal justice system are at a higher risk for repeated intimate partner violence (IPV), and understanding the factors that contribute to this can aid in early intervention.
  • The study examined the relationship between psychopathy traits and IPV victimisation in a group of 1354 adolescent offenders, using a longitudinal approach to gather data over multiple waves.
  • Results indicated that higher psychopathy scores, particularly in antisocial behavior and interpersonal manipulation, are linked to increased risks of recurring IPV victimisation, with notable sex differences influencing these outcomes in young adults.

Dimensional models of early life adversity highlight the distinct roles of deprivation and threat in shaping neurocognitive development and mental health. However, relatively little is known about the role of unpredictability within each dimension. We estimated both the average levels of, and the temporal unpredictability of deprivation and threat exposure during adolescence in a high-risk, longitudinal sample of 1354 youth (Pathways to Desistance study).
