Neodymium doped YVO(4) is becoming an increasingly popular material for solid state lasers. Among the advantages of vanadates over more traditional materials are that the absorption cross section at 808 nm is significantly larger, the emission cross sections are higher, leading to lower lasing thresholds, and the bandwidth for pump absorption is higher. We report new measurements of the refractive index and thermo-optic coefficient of this material that will aid in the design of laser cavities and other nonlinear optical elements.

Visual search becomes slower with aging, particularly when targets are difficult to discriminate from distractors. Multiple distractor rejection processes may contribute independently to slower search times: dwelling on, skipping of, and revisiting of distractors, measurable by eye-tracking. The present study investigated how age affects each of the distractor rejection processes, and how these contribute to the final search times in difficult (inefficient) visual search.

We propose an overview of the Rytov approximation in diffuse optics of biological tissues, for the inverse and forward problems. First, we show a physical interpretation of the Rytov approximation as a type of partial pathlength (named fluence rate partial pathlength) which is distinct from the usual partial pathlength for reflectance measurements. Second, we study the accuracy of the Rytov approximation for the calculation of Jacobians considering absorption perturbations and reflectance measurements.
