Cardiovascular risk and allostatic load in PTSD: The role of cumulative trauma and resilience in affected and trauma-exposed adults.

J Psychiatr Res

January 2025

Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University, Cape Town, South Africa; South African Medical Research Council Genomics of Brain Disorders Unit, Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University, South Africa.

Background: The pathophysiology of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) involves dysregulation of stress-sensitive biological systems due to repeated trauma exposure, predisposing individuals to the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Allostatic load (AL), an indicator of maladaptive stress responses, could shed light on the underlying biological mechanisms. We determined whether CVD risk and AL were associated with trauma load and resilience in women with PTSD and trauma-exposed controls (TEC).

Importance: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is often undiagnosed. Although genetic risk plays a significant role in COPD susceptibility, its utility in guiding spirometry testing and identifying undiagnosed cases is unclear.

Objective: To determine whether a COPD polygenic risk score (PRS) enhances the identification of undiagnosed COPD beyond a case-finding questionnaire (eg, the Lung Function Questionnaire) using conventional risk factors and respiratory symptoms.

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is characterized by the presence of at least one cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor, underscoring its potential to elevate CVD risk in affected individuals. However, evidence linking MASLD to subclinical coronary atherosclerosis remains scarce, and further investigations are necessary to elucidate the independent role of varying MASLD severities as a CVD risk factor.

Methods: This study analyzed 7,507 participants aged ≥ 40 who underwent comprehensive health evaluations at the Shanghai Health and Medical Center.

The role of endogenous cannabinoids (endocannabinoids; eCBs) in cognitive-related processes has been demonstrated in preclinical studies. However, observational studies are lacking. We examined the associations of multiple circulating eCBs and eCB-like molecules with cognitive function in a sample of dementia-free older adults.

HDL-associated vitamin D binding protein levels are inversely associated with necrotic plaque burden in psoriasis.

Atheroscler Plus

March 2025

Section of Inflammation and Cardiometabolic Diseases, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA.

Background And Aims: Vitamin D binding protein (DBP) serves a dual function as a vitamin D carrier and actin scavenger. Free DBP is present in high concentrations in serum, while a smaller pool is bound to lipoproteins like HDL and VLDL. The role of DBP's interaction with lipoproteins remains unclear.
